A Look Inside an Abandoned Hive

In this video I take a look inside an abandoned hive, prepare it for removal and transport to a new apiary.

This abandoned beehive hasnt been inspected in over 2 years.

It was left at the house by the previous owners and has lots of wild honey comb inside.

There is no queen excluder so the mated queen has been able to lay eggs all throughout the colony. The colony is spread over 6 boxes in total with 1 brood boxes and 5 supers.

I had to be very careful when prying supers apart as they were so well propolised together.

Abandoned beehives do post a disease risk so care must be taken not to spread disease to other apiaries. I first checked for signs of foulbrood and confirmed there was no foulbrood present in the colony before transporting to a quarantine apairy.

Everything you said was accurate (from the information that I have attempted to learn) and it was given in a helpful and educational manner without condescension. If I had to take a guess you are a facilitator by trade or a respected manager (by those reporting to you, not necessarily those you report to). Don't ever change. I had a huge colony of mason bees in my garden. I could go sit in the middle of them, they would come and land on me, rest, then fly off. Bees are amazing little creatures. I love them.

Some folks grumble about how bees are kept. Look at this though, those ladies, even given freedom to go anywhere else, find any wild place to settle in, were quite content to continue to use that old apiary. I'd say that means they like it there, eh?

I'm so glad the ladies are healthy, as friendly as the colony is and how well they put up with you, I gotta hope this can be salvaged.

Always find it amazing how different colonies react in different ways, especially when theyre defensive outside the hive but relatively calm when you open them up.

Very interesting. I’m not a beekeeper, but those bees are excellent girls, good job the Queen is found. Blue is a colour royalty so the Queen probably won’t mind the blue blob. Thankyou for this video xx

A trolley under the hive boxes would save your back. Hives full of honey are heavy .Great video !
