As the new Medical Sciences Building II continues to rise, construction crews recently poured concrete for the third floor. The five-story, 219,900-square-foot building is scheduled for completion next year.

Construction crews were recently seen on riding trowels, smoothing over the concrete that had been poured on the third floor. The riding trowels look like hovercraft as the construction workers slide over the concrete to smooth it. The installation of storm sewers continued, and shoring and decking were put in place to support the third floor.

TTUHSC El Paso emergency medicine residents can now order tests using a cutting edge biomedical device called BrainScope One. The device is being used at University Medical Center to help assess El Pasoans with brain injuries. Dr. Edward Michelson, professor and chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine at TTUHSC El Paso and medical director of the UMC emergency department, helped make UMC the second emergency department in the nation to make the technology available to patients.

Dr. Michelson said being able to order tests using the BrainScope One gives TTUHSC El Paso emergency medicine residents valuable training on how to weigh evidence to make informed decisions about patient care. Though BrainScope One can’t replace a traditional CT scan, Dr. Michelson said, the device has the benefit of emitting no radiation and costing much less, allowing for use with patients who are at low risk for brain bleeding.
