Biggest culture shocks for me in Türkiye 🇹🇷

I have been to Türkiye many times now. At this point you probably know it’s my favorite country to visit, it’s my favorite cuisine, and my girlfriend is Turkish.

When I first visited in 2022 there were some things I had to get used to, most of them being nice and positive. My culture and customs as a westerner from the Netherlands are very different to those of Turkish people.

The biggest culture shock for me was the service in Türkiye. Wherever you go, even if it’s in some highway restaurant or a food truck next to a station, the service is always exceptional.

The waiters and waitresses are always super friendly, especially when you’re a traveler. And a lot of times in restaurants they give you extras you didn’t ask for.

I’ve been to many places now in Türkiye, but I can’t wait to explore more of the Eastern side of the country. The further East I have been is Ankara. If you’re Turkish, what places would you recommend me (and others) to visit? 🇹🇷

Taking a taxi has become a problem even for the locals. I hope a solution is found for this issue soon.

We really like travelers. I respect them so much. I try to be very polite whenever I see them and it is also very fun to chat with them.

As a Turk, I love "This kind of toilets", because you do not have to sit on the same place where strangers have sat, which I think is more hygenic. And it provides a healthier position to relax. Moreover, we have water taps in the toilets. It was a culture shock for me when I was abroad, when I didn't see any water source in the toilets.

What a coincidence! I am travelling in Turkey now and I must say... you are absolutely right: Turkish people are so kind! We always get free baklava and tea whenever we go to a restaurant! ❤

1) In every street there are probably a lot more cat than you could expect, cats got really used to people and people really love cats.
2) Depends on the "bus" you are in. City busses have designated stops, you probably used what called "Dolmuş" type bus.
3) Side dishes are very common amongst local restaurants and some fast food like locations. They are "free".
4) These toilets are called "Alaturka" in Türkiye. However, this type of toilet could be find in various Asian countries.
5) England is the core of the tea jokes but Türkiye is the most tea consuming nation, especially black tea. If there is going to be a tea shortage, Türkiye probably gonna socially collapse, the Turks run on tea.
6) Classic everyday news, not surprising.
7) Like Americans obsession with eating anything with ranch, Turks can eat anything with yogurt. I personally not a fan of mixing my food with yogurt but for some dishes it is a staple.
8) There are probably some who are very rude but usually people are very kind to one another, not just to travelers and tourist.

I am actually in Bodrum and i am staying here for 5 days and everybody said to me in Lebanon from where I am from that the Turks are super racist and unfriendly, but when I arrived I meet the most wholesome and kind and helpful people that even in the 6 other countries that I travelled to I didn't find anyone like the Turks .♥️Türkiye from Lebanon

I call out to tourists for visiting Türkiye. Do not use taxi, instead there is a local start up which called MARTI TAG. It is same as Uber and lyft. You will know how much it cost before ride. 1.7 million people use Martı in Türkiye.

Actually most of the taxi scams happens in İstanbul. Cats are part of our society as well as other street animals. And if you do a little research that kind of toilets are way better for your health and excretory system. Hope you enjoyed beauties of my country.

I went to Türkiye last year! It was such an amazing experience! ❤ 🎉 It’s true, Istanbul is the city of cats! Also, the local Turkish people are so kind to everyone! I loved the Turkish tea so much, I brought a whole bag of Turkish tea powder back home and I drink it sometimes :)
