Tried this, but so far I the only app i can get to work is facebook. Even the Amazon app store fails as gets stuck at the update screen. Other apps just hang, or immediately crash. This is on a surface apro X Elite.

It's not broken, its deprecated. Microsoft announced back in March that they're killing the subsystem for Android in 2025. As of the announcement in March, "Windows 11 users will no longer be able to search for Amazon Appstore or associated Android apps from the Microsoft Store."
