How IITs Destroyed India's Education

India’s IITs are world-renowned, yet the country still faces a critical issue: millions lack access to quality primary education. While leaders like Jawaharlal Nehru envisioned these prestigious institutions as a cornerstone for national development, the focus on higher education came at the expense of foundational learning for the masses. In contrast, China invested heavily in primary education, resulting in far better outcomes across a wider population. After 70 years of independence, India’s education system still grapples with systemic inequities. The question remains: why is quality education still out of reach for a large section of India’s population.

IITs refine and enhance the brilliance of toppers, but schools have the power to transform an average student into a topper, which is far more impactful and important.

students in our country go to schools not to learn but to crack exams, the whole purpose of education is rendered useless and I didn't realize this until I left India and attended a different system of education, our country needs an educational reform urgently

Because in China, teachers are professional, they care about students and like to teach. But in India the majority of teachers are thinking about money, not the students.

As an IIT Dhanbad fresher, can confirm that government is spending more only on the top IITs. Our infrastructure is horrible, our culture isn't entrepreneurial, nearly 80 percent of the people are mediocre.

That’s why China is a leader in EV, AI, 5G, while we are slaving in services industry

Catchy title Mohak !

Good point "primary education is important". Teachers salary and schools needs to be upgraded. Scrutiny for teacher's are needed. Teachers are foundation of a society. A good teacher can produce good students

If our leaders itself not educated then how we can expect such policies.
I am in delhi and good to see that children of maids, drivers and local vendors, are getting much better education in government schools.
This is the direct feedback from these people as we normally in touch with them.

I am a student at one of these so called top colleges, can confirm that most of the freshers of these colleges comes from well to do families. While on other hand students from normal families struggles to do so because of such poor foundation, either spend large amount of money to get coaching for these colleges or forget the dream of such colleges. Proper middle class and lower middle class faces a lot these days. Ek taraf tax or dusri taraf yeh sab.

You might be right that government schools are not in good condition, but we must appreciate schools like Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya, which provide free education, residency, food, books, and daily necessities to the students (80% reserved for rural students). As a postgraduate from AIIMS and the first doctor from my family, this school was a blessing for me. And its not just me more than 90% of alumni from jnv are doing well in their life. The JNV system has been a remarkable educational experiment, empowering thousands of rural students to break socio-economic barriers and achieve their dreams, proving that with the right opportunity.

Nehru atleast tried to do his best and created world renowned institutions, the other prime ministers are responsible to make the primary education system better. We should remember that during Nehru's leadership India had just gained independence and hence the priorities were different but, now things are different. Though late, we should atleast try now.
