You have a good understanding of minimalism. Some people confuse minimalism with austerity, others with mortuary. I am a functionalist minimalist, everything in my house must serve at least one purpose and serve the purpose in the simplest possible way (Movado clock ) and aesthetically pleasing as a whole. I use minimum number of colors for each space, not more than 3.
I am not afraid of bold colors such as red. We don't have accent color in minimalism

Minimalism is a nice idea for the fashion conscious but has a very small market. It is ill suited to the needs of children or the elderly. It is too pure form and inflexible for modern living.
