I'd say the carbon fibre hull idea has now been tested adequately at depth... and found to be wanting. It can't be modelled in a computer in advance because it's not a pure material but a composite. It's known to be better at holding internal pressure in (as in a pressurized airliner like the Dreamliner 787) than holding external pressure out because it's spun from fibres that are stronger in tension than compression. It loses a little bit of strength with each compression-decompression cycle until it fails by shattering with little warning. As was demonstrated last week at the cost of 5 lives.
