Five years ago, COVID-19 devastated the world. Now, the HMPV virus outbreak in China is creating panic. This fear is understandable because we have not forgotten the deadly impact of COVID-19. But is HMPV as deadly as Covid? There is both good news and a bad news. First, the good news.

Unlike COVID-19, HMPV is not a new virus. It was first detected in 2001 in the Netherlands. This means hospitals and healthcare systems have experience in managing HMPV infections. So far, the World Health Organization has not issued any specific warnings about new mutations or increased severity of HMPV. The American Lung Association says HMPV is similar to the common cold and isn't a major concern, though it can be more severe for vulnerable groups.

But wait, there's bad news. A study from Children's National Hospital in Washington, D.C., has raised serious concerns. The study shows that ICU admission and mortality rates for respiratory viruses, including HMPV, are similar to those seen with COVID-19 in hospitalized children. Moreover, the percentage of hospitalizations was higher for HMPV and other respiratory viruses in this group.

Based on the information we have so far, it's hard to say if the HMPV outbreak is as serious as COVID-19. We will need to wait for updates from health organizations like the WHO and governments. Let's hope the virus is controlled and doesn't become a global crisis. We wish good health and happiness to everyone.
