Photuris - Synchronous Fireflies of Congaree National Park

Показать описание
Every year tens of thousands of fireflies (Photuris frontalis) emerge from the leaf litter in Congaree National Park to begin their bioluminescent mating ritual. As darkness falls, this species of firefly, also commonly called a "snappy sync," begins to flash in unison. The effect is like watching the heartbeat of the swamp, pulsing lights hovering over the bottomlands. This short film was created during the COVID-19 pandemic when the National Park was closed to the public and when the fireflies could be viewed without the interference of external lights.

Ill never forget one night as I was walking home from a friends house (a route id taken at least 100 times) but one night i looked to my left and saw what must have been 5, 000 fireflies completely lighting up a field in unison... Still one of the most beautiful things ive ever seen in person and something ill never forget

In the Philippines, fireflies were so abundant that even Miguel Lopez De Legazpi (A spanish navigator) first came to an island in the Philippines, he called it "Isla De Fuego" because of how abundant fireflies are in the Mango trees, Molave trees, etc. They're so many that they lit up the island as if it was glowing, that's how ridiculously many.

The sound effects added to the fireflies takes away from this potentially awesome video.

Just witnessed fireflies with my own eyes this evening for the first time. It really is so magical having that first experience.

There were so many fireflies in East Indian jungles and villages even in cities. Where have all the fireflies gone?

We still have it in the shade grown coffee estates with wild trees and wild animals around.. all around our farmhouse from middle of April till the monsoon rains drown them.

Mac, I have access to a population of p. frontalis on a private farm. I’m a still photographer and know squat about videography. May I ask the camera you used?
