This Class Is BRUTAL to New Players In Guild Wars 2

I was curious why new players tended to stay away from the Thief in Guild wars 2, so I jumped in to see how it felt playing the core thief in tough endgame content! Here are my thoughts!

Difficulty Scale is based on 1 to 10 (1 being easy, 10 challenging)

3000 hours on Thief here, can’t play anything else because everyother class feels cumbersome, clunky and lacking mobility.

When I first played this game in 2014, I started with the Thief. Had no idea it was supposed to be that complex. Assassin is my go to class so I went with it. Enjoyed the hell out of it. Favorite part was that it depended less on repeating the same rotation over and over and more on reacting at the right time and using skills situationally instead of pressing buttons in the same order to maximize damage.
I remember the first time I went into PvP, I had no idea what I was doing. The sheer mobility and subterfuge was so much fun. For me its always been the most intuitive class to play. I can't recall the build but the weapon set I most favored was Sword/Pistol and Shortbow.
Super excited to try the Power Daredevil now.

Speaking as someone with a warrior main, playing Thief was initially very painful, due to not just a decrease in direct survivability... but a literal absence of it. One second, dead.
But as soon as I got into playing the role, so to speak, and treated it as a game of tag with enemies - where the goal is to not be touched - I found that it clicked with me a lot more. Being able to wipe every condition on me, twice, via stealth... and having three stealth utilities equipped; much fun.

Even the group stealth thing can be highly effective as a support tool, but it does require that teammates understand that they're invisible. That they should not immediately attack something, but consider the stealth an opportunity to catch their breath and calculate.

The timing issue with the skills is taking a while to master though - Warrior abilities are INCREDIBLY sluggish. Due to a combination of the ability designs and their attack animations, coupled with inherent latency, the optimal technique for my warrior is to actually hold down the button until it fires, because that's the only way to ensure that it WILL fire.

But with thief? You have to touch-type with your action bar.

One thing I did observe - the action cam shines. Because it forces you to focus less on the broader aspects of the battle, less on specific targeting at range, and more on your own position and movement. And it seems like mastering your own basic movement is the absolute foundation of thief survival; your presence is inherently disruptive, so the primary focus should be on maintaining your own presence.

Speaking again as a warrior - there is nothing more confusing than encountering a well-played thief who makes their teammates vanish, forcing you to stand there blinking like an idiot, wondering if someone teleported or turned invis or disconnected or whut.

I have zero playtime on a thief. But this will change this weekend. The video looks like i could have some fun with it, gonna try it out.

I've just recently come back to the game after I stopped playing just after release all those years ago. The difference is almost startling and I'm often overwhelmed; your class guides have been incredibly helpful in learning the game from scratch.
I've since then taken an Elementalist all the way to level 80 and I’ve begun unlocking the Tempest line, had fun with the Necromancer, Mesmer, Ranger, Engineer and Thief.

I had most fun using a shortbow with a thief but didn't keep the character, now I switch between my Elementalist, Engineer and recently I rolled a new ranger and I’m having a lot of fun with duel axes even if they're not the best choice.
I hope one day to go back to a thief class for the deadeye elite spec or a mesmer for the virtuoso spec because both play styles appeal to me even if, again, they aren’t the best ones.

Other day, had just got a thief to 80, core, had more HP than you have, full exotic, engaged with a core warrior who everyone was leaving alone. Got one-shotted. like...BAM dead. Bullshit. So I came running back and let him do that on camera few times in order to send it in. Then I noticed...someone on my wvw team laughed in say the first time it happened. I said something like yeah thanks for the help man...(he was playing soulbeast and just standing watching this guy). Now, the warrior could have been a developer. And I get beat sometimes, no big deal. Had a pretty good willbender who beat me pretty quickly in actual 1v1 duals before I went back to the same spot and beat her. No biggie. But this guy, on our server, was a troll. He starts talking about how bad I am, and I said yeah...nobody is THAT bad. Core warriors do not do 18k damage with one shot. Your buddy who you're talking to on discord...yeah tell him he's about to lose his account. See, awhile back while playing against Maguuma server, there was a hacker abusing people, and somebody on our team knew how to spot it and report it. She got a bunch of people to send in reports and...I've never seen that guy online again. So, this guy's buddy suddenly becomes defensive...oh well, I just beat him in a duel (soulbeast beats core warrior, bfd news at 11...) and I said, yeah because he let you, but he can't hide those one-shots. And Arenanet will see the time stamps of your mouthing off and his attacks, and well we'll see what happens. Haven't seen that guy since. IMAGINE THAT. My thief is now a deadeye, rifle/dd, loads of fun, have had moderate success with him. Oh and to be fair, while hackers do tend to gravitate to Maguuma, it's a very competitive server with a lot of excellent players. They have great comms and response times on defense--very frustrating to play against even without their hacked spawn camps.

As a new player starting on the Thief, yep. I need to break the static thinking and open world I seem to get wrecked if I have 3+ targets to contend with. Need to get the experience to be more fluid in controls and movement though. Also flying solo doesn't help, but I'll adapt.

I'm running a power daredevil with staff and short bow. It can slap pretty well but it can be hectic as well especially being a new player and when I'm new to a fight and have to focus on the mechanics and playing optimally.

That south park wow clip at the beginning floored me for some reason lol, loving your vids brother! As a new player, I started 2 weeks ago, ive been bouncing around warrior thief and mesmer and im leaning hard towards thief its just a fun class, hoping the near end game/end game doesn't start beating me down like on my mesmer tho :D just gotta get better at avoidance which is pretty easy imo on thief

Ironically enough, the Thief Build I enjoy the most is Dagger/Dagger Deadeye, there is just something satisfying about setting up your Ambush Attack and then chunking an Elite Mob to high Heavens and back, only for you to stealth and then repeat

I've played thief since day 1 of Gw2, I love the dynamic nature of the play, you have to be aware as you said. I think there are too many Profesions that off lower risk for same rewards in PVE and also give out more supporting boons and why you see less of them. Even the "support spec" spectre is limited by a game that does splash boons so much that supporting a tethered target feels like extra work for the sake of it.

Off course in WvW and PvP when played well they are the punishers for the players that over extend in a flash a thief has you in a world of hurt. Yet I will continue to harber the thief close to my heart, especisally playing a little asuran thief the death blosssom with asuran is so yoda :D

Thief was my first class when I started playing and GW2 had just released. Has been my main until Revenant released, I actually liked playing it Sword/Pistol.

Thief played right can be pretty good, but you're right about them being extremely squishy. For leveling Sword/Pistol is simple with a pulsing 5 second blind, a good gap closer and a nice amount of damage. For elite specs Spectre is amazing in both solo and groups. Scepter/Pistol 3 is a backward blink with a high damage secondary skill.

Played thief as my main for 300 hours back in the beginning of gw2. Now I’ve come full circle and have a deadly thief assassin for WvW and all those hours I put in are coming to use ! INSANE mobility and damage!

Just checked 11, 284 hrs on my main (plus maybe a couple hundred on a thief I made to run HoT well under leveled). I've got 1, 946 hrs on a mesmer I use for map, HP, tour runs, and another maybe just shy of 1K on my other alts in total (I have each profession which I've boosted just to learn them for PvP and 12 mesmers parked around JPs and such for my map runs) My total in game is 15, 886 over my 22 characters. I've been playing since before HoT but still this tells me I need a life lul. I've only leveled my main and another theif (level through HoT btw, yes stealth is important lul).

GW2 was my first game aside from Tetris and Battle Toads/Mario back in the day. I started just before HoT was released. I was so green I put in a ticket because my 'F' skill was just a black box (back then it was just a black box until you stole something) and I thought it was a glitch or broken. I started HoT through getting in to Auric Basin from
Guilded Hollow. No idea you had to start the story to get a glider, ran around straight up lvl 80 for about 3 wks just lvl 80 unlocking all the WPs and even did Dragon Stand 20 times before I got my glider. Just used to Tel to Friend for the last fight until I ran out then just went and got pod while the last fight raged. Well, 8 or so years later and I'm a pretty decent thief whose solo'd dungeons, HoT HP bosses, completed all the raid wings, hit plat in sPvP.... commanded hundreds of map runs and events from Orr to Silver Waste to HoT and PoF, tought Raiding....

I've played thief for over 10 years. I even started commanding on a daredevil in wvw.

I have several builds in every flavor but core tied and switch a lot depending on my mood or situation.

I recommend a build that heals from output damage and to start with daredevil for extra evades. This will give new players high sustainability and damage.

Once you learn that pay around with different weapon sets then move onto deadeye.

If you are a never the specter will feel very familiar and maybe a better start.

Sheet now is good but learning access right away is better. Axe/dagger will give you a shadow step. Axe/pistol #3 will not shadow step. Switch between those two offhands depending on your situation.

Staff is fantastic as your other until you understand the class. If you're in WvW use rifle to component the axe/pistol. Don't start axe/dagger in WvW if you're new, but use it later to lock down an enemy with a shadow step

The moment I realised I started with a thief and recognise all these problems lol

I decided to main a daredevil after getting most classes to 80 over the last few months. Everything else felt like it had something missing
