Steve & the Mars / Bar-B-Q with Oliver North, 1989

Bar-B-Q with Oliver North is dedicated to commercial radio and the music press. The piece is based on stereotypical little compositions popular in the 1960s (Ghostriders in the Sky by The Shadows or Telstar by The Tornados, Early Bird by André Brasseur) as well as other cheap musical glorifications of the technological inventions of the time. It was the era of the Cold War and the era of faith in security with the nuclear bomb as a deterrent. Thousands of small twist combos, surf bands or beat groups found a truly ingenious formula to reflect the political, social and technical post-war zeitgeist: the three-minute instrumental track to dance to and feel better than the others behind the Iron Curtain

Oliver Laurence North (born October 7, 1943). A veteran of the Vietnam War, North was a National Security Council staff member during the Iran–Contra affair, a political scandal of the late 1980s. It involved the illegal sale of weapons to the Khomeini regime of the Islamic Republic of Iran to encourage the release of American hostages then held in Lebanon.

From 1988, thanks to the use of the Super Studio Session application on his Macintosh SE/30, Signer was able to give shape to his idea of the band "Steve & The Mars" in "style-free space" using computer technology for the first time - or at least approximate it. The software is limited in the number of staves available; the use of odd meters or demanding note values is complicated.

Bar-B-Q with Oliver North ist dem kommerziellen Radio und der Musik-Presse gewidmet. Oliver Laurence North (geboren am 7. Oktober 1943). Der Vietnamkriegsveteran war während der Iran-Contra-Affäre, einem politischen Skandal in den späten 1980er Jahren, Mitglied des Nationalen Sicherheitsrates. Dabei ging es um den illegalen Verkauf von Waffen an das Khomeini-Regime der Islamischen Republik Iran, um die Freilassung amerikanischer Geiseln zu fördern, die damals im Libanon festgehalten wurden.

Ab 1988, dank dem Einsatz der Applikation Super Studio Session auf seinem Macintosh SE/30, kann Signer seiner Vorstellung der Band "Steve & The Mars" im "stilfreien Raum" erstmals computertechnisch Gestalt verleihen – oder mindestens Annäherungen daran vornehmen. Die Software ist in der Anzahl der zur Verfügung stehenden Notensysteme limitiert; der Einsatz ungerader Metren oder anspruchsvoller Notenwerte ist kompliziert.
