This is actually a pivotal moment for Vegeta. Back in the Cell saga Vegeta couldn't protect Trunks from a surprise attack from Cell after he regenerated and he watched Trunks die helplessly. This time he made damn sure history didn't repeat itself. Over time he went from being the selfish Prince of Saiyans to the Dad of Saiyans, arguably one of the best character arcs in all of Dragon Ball.

When Vegeta makes the sacrifice play Goku knows it's time to straighten up and lay out bodies. Seriously, buu arc Goku straight up says he was fucking around for most of it. Vegeta while dead starts to "hold off" buu receiving the ass whipping of a life time and Goku's like "Ok, now I need to kill that guy"
