This is common in Africa but we use wool yarn since its thicker and easier to distinguish from hair when unplaiting

The amount of patience black women have is so genuinely impressive. I get impatient and mad tryna learn to braid 😭😭

Ladies be careful with putting thread in your hair like this. Too tight and it can cause some serious breakage, if not out in correctly can get severely tangled in the hair, too loose and it wont hold the desired style

African parents have been doing this for years but you need thicker thread that will not damage the hair. We have many styles for it. Some where it is twisted around the hair and allows the hair to grow long and some is where the inspiration for Bantu knots came from. I am Bantu from the tribe who is spread out all over Africa. That is why there many different variants of Bantu knots now most people only know one the most popular one. Weaves also and crocheting use thick thread with a more curved needle so that you do not stab yourself in the head. There are a lot of African hairstyles that have been lost over the years to African Dysphorian children that have forgotten their heritage because they forced not to pass it on. ( This is not to come at anyone in the present day but for the history of why not a lot of African Americans and Africans that were forced under colonial rule in Africa who do not know much about their heritage and culture and now are disassociating themselves with it because they do not understand or know anything about it) But are regaining it through the media and the African tribes and countries that kept their traditions, heritage and culture as well as history alive even though all of those hardships. We did educate ourselves like even my cousins who are European on their fathers side know nothing about their Viking heritage or that Vikings and many Europeans braided their hair and had dread it is not just a black thing or reggae culture but a universal thing that many cultures had because we were more united back then. Vikings had a long standing relationship with Africans and so did the Chinese, Japanese, Indigenous( Because their were African explorers that went to the many continents before European colonization which was not all European countries but the ones that wanted resources because they destroyed theirs and power which was the imperialism era, Indians and more. Most countries in history had very strong and lasting bonds but when their Brother and sister nation were destroyed or overpowered they were no longer able to communicate and fell apart. Even today because they see that the youth are becoming more united Despite the various government trying to divide us based on religion, politics, races and nationality. They are eradicating historical figures and evidence that various groups of individuals exist or where friends. Evidence that shows their identity, impact on societal development and their advancement to the world structure all because they do not want to admit that we are not different or that one is less than the other and this is all Bureaucracy that made by a made up sense of classism that never actually existed in history until imperialism. Even race which came from classism was not real until after colonial times which inforced it. We have always been mixed and Paleontologist have been saying this for years but no one acknowledges them because it goes against political beliefs and views and would break the already unstable government system we have around the world that just care about hierarchy and not the people they represent or govern. 😅

This is how European women used to do their hair when elastics weren't invented yet. It goes back thousands of years even to the times of the ancient Greeks and Romans. Nice to see thread being used in hair styling again.

Be careful its not to tight! It can cause damage! Looks great girl! Scandinavians do this as well, started in the Viking era, we made the handle out of bones, depending on the color of ur hair we used different colors and rune beads to decorate! ❤❤❤
