1) Write the oxidation numbers for each element.
2) Write the half reactions for the species of interest.
3) Balance each half-reactions for:
- atoms of interest.
- Oxygen (O) atoms by adding H2O.
- Hydrogen (H) atoms by adding H+ ions.
- electrons (charge) by adding electrons.
4) Balance the overall equation for electrons (charge).
5) Add half reactions and simplify.

In my homework questions this reaction is done by balancing OH- ions instead of H+ ions because it is in a basic solution. How do I go about balancing when H2O and OH- both have oxygen atoms? Thanks so much..
