Mark 9:2-10

Jesus said that some people would see the manifestation of the Kingdom of God before they would die (Mark 9:1). Theologians believe reference is made to what follows in Mark 9:2-10. Jesus went through a metamorphosis on the mountain. As the Son of Man, He showed these disciples His full essence as the Messiah.
What we see in Jesus’ humility, we will one day see in His exaltation, Philippians 2:8-11.

In the book, The Training of the Twelve, the author made this statement about the transfiguration. “That night scene among the mountains during which heaven was for a few brief moments let down to earth.”

The privileged opportunity to witness transformation, Mark 9:2.

Jesus led His disciples to a high mountain area to a place of solitude.
Some of the greatest experiences with God are in the places of solitude, Matthew 6:5-6.

The privileged opportunity to witness metamorphosis, Mark 9:2-3.

They saw Jesus transfigured [μεταμορφόω].

They saw Jesus’ inner nature revealed.
His glorification as He walked in humility.
His Divine nature overrides His human shell.
They saw Jesus’ radiance.
Clothing white and dazzling.
Facial features transformed, Luke 9:29 [from Dr. Luke].
In His glory, Revelation 1:12-18; Matthew 28:3.

The privileged opportunity to see ancient heroes talk with Jesus, Mark 9:4.

Moses’ mountain top experience, Exodus 24:12-18.
Elijah’s mountain top experience, 1 Kings 19:8-18.

Moses’ death was immediate and painless, and private, Deuteronomy 34:1, 4-6. Jesus’ death would be drawn out, painful, and public.
Elijah would miss the death experience and have a triumphant exit, 2 Kings 2:9-12. Jesus would face death and experience an agonizing exit.
These two men represented the Law and the Prophets respectively. Jesus came to fulfill the Law and the Prophets, Matthew 5:17.

The privileged opportunity to hear the voice of God, Mark 9:7.

They saw the Shekinah glory of God.
Moses would be familiar with that Shekinah glory at the Tabernacle, Exodus 16:10; 24:15-18; 40:34-35.
They heard the voice of God, “This is my beloved Son.”
They were to continue to listen to the Son of God, “Listen to Him.”
“Listen” = hear with the intent to obey.

For someone who needs Jesus, “And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.” Acts 4:12.

For the Christian who knows Jesus, “If you love me, you will keep my commandments.” John 14:15.
