Marbal's cassette of this amazing recording is significantly better than previously circulated copies. The taper's microphones appear to have been perfectly positioned and he seems to have used a professional reel-to-reel recorder. I asked Grolsch for his thoughts on the tape's origins and he mentioned that there was a rumour that it was done by a ZDF employee who used the TV station's equipment.

I saw Pink Floyd at the Auditorium theater in Chicago in 1971. The Auditorium is one of the best places for sound. The place was only half full because no one heard of Pink Floyd at that time. To this day the best concert I ever saw. No light show, no props, they didn't need them.

I believe what you have here is: A direct plug-into the PA mixing sound board from the sound mixer and recorded live. There is NO auditorium ambience and no echo from the hall.
I think this is an original live mix, not a re-master, and is a *REALLY GOOD MIX*. I've been a recording technician and a recorded musician and familiar with a lot of tech in the industry!

Very authentic, if it was a ZDF employee a very brave one and thanks to have it rediscovered one way or another. Unfortunately not all German public broadcasting institutions aware of those diamonds!!!

I WAS IN COUNTRY DURING UMBAGUMBA REALEASE AND REALLY NEVER GOT INTO IT NOR DID I get into Euegene and his axe, a great friend however loves it and nearly worships MY BIKE to each their own one album from all the jams Pink Floyd gave a real life to. I feel blessed iust listening and playing the fender strat and a my newly aquire Gibson Les Paul. I too Cherish most of all of Pink Floyd and even Liked Sids attempt at solo singing. Peace Out Tim

I’ve actually never heard a version with actual lyrics. Usually Careful with that Axe is just an instrumental with some over dubbed voices, screeching then the only lyrics “Careful, Careful With that Axe, Eugene”. This version has much more. I can’t really make out the lyrics but it’s fucken awesome anyways.
