"Twist, Twist Senora" was recorded by Gary U.S. Bonds and released in March 1962 on Legrand Records. It reached #9 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 in May 1962. It was featured on his 1962 album “Twist Up Calypso”. Enjoy my DES [Digitally Extracted STEREO] conversion of this early 60’s R&B classic
Gary U.S. Bonds (born Gary Levone Anderson, June 6, 1939) is an American rhythm and blues and rock and roll singer, known for his classic hits "New Orleans", "Quarter to Three" and "Twist, Twist Senora".
Written by Frank Guida, Gene Barge and Joseph F. Royster.
The recording featured saxophonist Gene Barge
I had this 45 when I was a kid in the 60’s. It was one of several in a box of 45 “cutouts” I bought from a local hardware store. This song has quite a bit of sentimental value, being my 1st R&B 45 I ever bought.
I saw Gary live at the old Irvine Meadows Arena in the early 2000’s. He put on a great show! He had everybody twisting!
About the original MONO mix.
The source was the original mono mix. I believe the album was mixed in mono only and never mixed in stereo. Even at age 8, I thought the record sounded like crap. It was super-distorted and tinny. with no definition. The lyrics were unintelligible. It sounded like a $1.00 crystal microphone plugged into to a cheap early 60’s consumer tape recorder.
About my DES mix:
For the vocals, I removed the original plate reverb and replaced it with slow stereo reverb. I painstakingly isolated the sax solo with SpectraLayers PRO-7's Spectral Editor so I could center it. I separated the remainder of the instruments for a good stereo effect. I panned the Drums Right and made them reverb into the Left. The bass was mixed way back and almost nonexistent. I kept it centered and raised it 1.5DB. I did my best to make it sound as good as possible with the compromised audio of the original recording.
Technical Information:
I used iZotope RX-8 to isolate the Vocals, Instruments, Drums and Bass into 4 separate tracks. I used SpectraLayers PRO-7 to isolate the Sax solo so I could center it. Adobe Audition 2020 was used for Dynamic Range recovery, Reverb, Delay, EQ, and final mixdown. Sonic Studio’s Amarra Luxe Sound Processor was used for post EQ and upsampling. NERO 2019 Platinum used to generate the final video.
Enjoy my MONO-to-STEREO conversion of this breakout R&B/Twist hit from the early 60’s by Gary U.S. Bonds.
