Incredibly inspired by the works of great photographers of the day, he started out as a messenger and driver and, three months later, was introduced to layout artist, Jürgen Schadeberg, who trained him as his darkroom assistant until he was given his first assignment as field photographer at the 1955 ANC convention in Bloemfontein. He has received countless accolades and awards and his photographs have appeared in Life magazine, the New York Times, National Geographic and Time magazine.
