9.4 Sigma Bonds and Pi Bonds | General Chemistry

Показать описание
Chad provides a brief lesson comparing and contrasting sigma bonds and pi bonds. The lesson begins with how to identify sigma and pi bonds in Lewis structures and thereby how to calculate the number of sigma and pi bonds in a molecule. All single bonds are sigma bonds, a double bond has 1 sigma bond and 1 pi bond, and a triple bond has 1 sigma bond and 2 pi bonds. Chad then shows how bonds are formed due to the overlap of atomic orbitals, and then expounds on sigma overlap and pi overlap. Sigma bonds result from sigma overlap, the end-to-end overlap of atomic orbitals (s, p, or hybrid orbitals), whereas pi bonds result from pi overlap, the side-to-side overlap of p orbitals. The lesson concludes with a description of the sigma and pi bonds in ethylene as well as a description of which atomic orbitals are involved in the overlap.

Thank you so much sir, your videos are incredibly helpful, I'm currently in my first year of A level chemistry and found this topic impossible to understand when it was explained to me in school, truly appreciate it!

Woww God bless you brother this video helped me so much! The only reason I knew you were Christian was bc I was looking at your shirt and had to search it up because it definitely seemed like Christian apparel and it was haha! Thank you so much and keep shining for His glory through these videos and teaching!

Whenever I am looking for any chemistry explanation. I look up for you first. Only if that content doesn’t pop up from your channel do I go look elsewhere.
I can’t believe you’re this good. 💪

This has helped me so much thank you!!! Quick question: Does having a lone pair count as an electron domain?
