I am in Horley next to Gatwick Airport for a look around St Bartholomew’s Church, The Church is around 800 Years Old and named after St Bartholomew since 1565 and has some of the best-preserved Medieval Graffiti in the World most notably in the North Porch. I also talk about Henry Webber who is thought to be the Oldest Person Killed at The Battle of the Somme Aged 67 in The First World War. Sunday Lunch is at The Six Bells Pub next door which is considered one of the Oldest Inns in the Country (named after the Bells from the Church although there are now Eight Bells!).

We lived a couple of roads away a few years ago from the church and pub. My other half actually worked in the pub kitchen in her younger years. Luckily the very old part of the pub survived a fire in 2019.

What hidden gems Marq. I’ve stayed in the Gatwick Travelodge nearby & shopped at the Tesco there & didn’t know this beautiful church & pub was close at hand.

Yes wasn’t the weather horrible throughout Winter? It’s been glorious for days now - making up for lost time.
Liked to have seen more of the church- at least it was open. Tales of tunnels exist at lots of churches- here our medieval church DOES actually have discovered tunnels running to the high street. The adjacent pub was built to act as a hostel for the masons building the church so very old. Thanks Marq!

St Bart’s is notoriously difficult to get access inside unless it’s a service. For some reason, the more evangelical the congregation, the less likely it will be open!

In the new development known as Westvale in Horley, all the roads are named after local people who died in the First World War and Webber Way is the main road through the estate!

Overflow graveyard is a bit of a depressing term! I quite like the misty conditions as it makes the churchyards quite atmospheric.
