Intel ARC Alchemist GPU's are REALLY BAD VALUE!

The company unveiled their arc GPUs last year, and since then, it seems like it's just been bad news after bad news. First, we thought it would release in the last quarter of last year but they announced them for Q1 2022. Then intel failed to deliver and readjusted the timeline for Q2 2022, then it turns out they weren’t planning on selling these things to everyone. Only to very specific Asian markets.

Then we heard that desktop variants would pop up in Q2, Q2 happened and all we got was the Arc A380, one of the low-end GPU’s, and once again, only in a very specific market. Now that we’re in Q3, according to intel, we should be seeing higher-end GPU’s. Gaming and workstation. Guess what, Nothing.

All we really are getting are benchmarks of the A380 or specific laptop models. Like for example, this week, new 3Dmark benchmarks for the A550M and A770M popped up.

In this leak, the a550M, which is supposed to be a mid-tier laptop GPU, has a graphics score of about 6000 points in the 3D mark time spy benchmark. That’s not a horrible score. It's about GTX 1660 levels of performance. But that GPU is already out the window. Do you want to know why? Because it's a terrible value proposition.

Let me explain, first, the benchmark. While 3D mark time spy can be a somewhat fine way of calculating relative gaming performance, the fact is that intel optimized for it and this result is just an inflated result. It says it here too. Rule-breaking driver optimizations. So we can expect that the regular driver will be worse.

Well. The arc card has 8 GB vram and decent encoding capabilities.
Build quality and quality of materials seems high.

Valve's main market is steam games, reaching out to the other handheld makers is the SMART move. The more devices running their OS the more games they sell. I wouldn't be surprised if that wasn't the plan all along, to produce a good enough handheld running a lot of steam games to encourage others to do the same to increase their buyer/user base. It was never really about the hardware.

3:01 7 years ago I bought a $900 laptop with a GTX 960M. Now, you can buy a <$900 laptop with an RTX 3060M, which is 9x faster in FP32 and 4x faster in memory bandwidth. That is crazy.

Did we not give AMD a chance? Look at how close AMD is to nvidia now. Look at the improvements between the RX 5000 and 6000 series. Everything and everyone deserves a chance so saying something is doa without allowing them to get better is not cool. AMD and nvidia have years of gpus under their belt. I like to be fair to everyone despite what opinions people have. In the end if intel succeeds we win. This is something I try to teach my son.

Kinda clickbait with the title. The Arc A380 launched ONLY in China with little to no advertisement. Nor have they stated that their drivers were ready, or that the card was really anything besides available in China. Even then, it seems to have had a silent release. Arc is still very young and we haven’t been promised or told anything about what is currently out so it doesn’t suck nor is it good, but that doesn’t necessarily mean the A380 is setting the tone for future North American releases.

Valve seem to wanna go the open-source Android way, to sell more software aka games. Smart move. Expand the Steam Store

I'm glad I got the 3050 and didn't wait for alchemist. Still hopeful for battlemage and celestial if they don't pull out from the GPU market

Slagging off an Intel discrete GPU is like, when you find one, pissing on a unicorn's leg. :D

well.... the CPU consume a lot of power and generate a lot of heat.
so it's like a 12900k CPU on steroids from a frequency point of view.
no ipc improvement visible... for now.

I'm not sure Valve's move is really a "good guy" move. They want to sell games on their platform more than they want to sell steam decks :) The more handhelds with Steam on them, the more money they make. I call it a "smart" move on their part.

Back when the SteamDeck was released GPD made a post on their Chinese social media page saying their product was better because they said it is running Windows which is better for games piracy.

if the 13900k on 5GHz is as fast as the 12900K on 5Ghz doesnt that means there will be potential many cases its not going to be faster than the 12900K, only if it CAN clock higher?
