NGL, that phoenix fact makes sense. It wasn't the phoenix choosing jean as a way of aiding her but that her power potential was on par and apparently surpasses the entity itself. Now that I think about it, the fact that her telepathy reached out into the cosmos for help while cradling her friends life and feeling what she felt is an incredible display of power at such a young age.

This is an informative video on Jean. Being aware of the mental limitation blocks Professor X put on Jean is one thing but Jean showing no telepathic powers until much later is something I didn’t remember.

The Phoenix Force wasnt supposed to be a different entity, the writers intended it to be Jean's peak mutant capabilities.

Unfortunately, the bosses of Marvel at the time DO NOT LIKE having a female heroine being stronger than THOR...so they writers made it a separate entity instead as we all know now.
