Over here in Europe we got normal "winter tires" (labeled mud and snow "M+S" on the Side) and real "snow/ice tires" (many of them with spikes) - for the ppl that drive in north finnland, sweden and norway. The normal wintertire is not for "only driving on snow". As soon as the temps hit 7 °C (or 44 °F) and below M+S Tires will perform better overall than all season. It's because they use a softer compound, so if the temps get lower, they just dont get "as hard" as summer or all season tires. In my part of germany we dont get much snow (hardly 2 full weeks), but I wont trust my life to all seasons. Specially cause my car needs to function everyday - I can't say "oh it started heavy snowing - guess I stay at home today, until they clear the roads".

I've been using socks for 5 years now, and for the last 3 years on my Mustang Mach-E, and I highly recommend them too. I live in San Diego and my Mach-E has AWD but stupidly skinny all season 225 tires, which are fine for daily Socal driving but in the winter when we go up into the mountains of Big Bear a couple hours away, roads can get really bad. In the mountains here you start to see signs that "chains are required", but they're such a hassle I refuse to use them. Socks are so easy to put on and take off, and store perfectly underneath the trunk storage or in the frunk of my Mach-E. The only issue I've ever had is convincing the local police doing chain checks that the socks are legit and actually work as good if not better. I once had to show a cop a YouTube video and explain how they work to convince him to let me pass. So they haven't yet quite caught up to the mainstream. But I can literally plow through almost anything with the socks on, they're amazing. I think everyone who drives in bad weather should keep a set in their trunk!

I have winter tires for when the temps get below 40F because 'all seasons' become hockey pucks. All-weather tires like the Michelin CrossClimate are good for the occasional snow we get in Canada

This is a good balance for someone who needs extra grip for that one day of snow and doesn't want to swap tires/wheels. GR Corolla with studded snow tires is my dream setup

It’s temperature that determines snow tire use not snow coverage. That would just be a benefit.

I could be wrong, but I’m pretty sure that snow tires provide better grip on pavement when you’re in temperatures below 40°. They also obviously provide better grip on snow covered surfaces as well but it’s not just snow. Now yes you get above 40° and they become worse but I feel like this video is kind of misleading.

The snow socks seemed like a good idea until you learn the 25 mph max speed limitation, and then they seem less useful. I live in the Midwest and probably get less snow, but was hoping for something that could make my all season tires closer to snow tires but at all normal driving speeds without having to put snow tires on. Maybe they’ll improve.

“Limited to 25mph” where in the world would that even be useful? Snow tires are made not just for snow, but also grip better in colder temperatures. Chains can work at MUCH faster speeds than 25mph.

It took over half the video, 03:30 for you to finally get to the point. Hard to believe someone from Texas knew about snow socks before you

Those are great to have in the trunk of your rear wheel drive car

Matt, I have to correct you on one thing about winter tires and its this, they DO work better on dry pavement...when its under 45 degrees because they stay more pliable, thus better grip and braking👈

A much better alternative is to use 'All-Weather' tires. Yes, they wear out a bit faster than all-season tires, but you don't have to change them in the summer, you can leave them on all year long. They are halfway between all-season and winter tires in terms of snow traction, but they won't fall apart in the summer heat the way standard winter tires will.

I like the idea of not having to fully commit to an extra set of tires or having some form of backout plan for unexpected snow.

Most OEM all seasons are crap. Best choice is one of the new all weather tires since they also help in rain and on cold, dry roads.

They're not snow tires, they're winter tires. Sure if you only use your car occasionally, stick with all season tires, but if you daily drive your car in places that get temperatures below 35 Fahrenheit then get winter tires. This is a commercial for a product hardly anyone would ever use.

If you commute for work in a snowy climate (i.e. Pittsburgh) you cannot beat M+S tires. Socks are just too limited…and 25mph…not practical at all. Yes, winter dedicated tires are expensive but they also extend the life of your summer set. Think about heading north to Erie, for example, running into snow bands on 79. Would you pull over and slap on the socks???

Am I the only one that felt bummed out with this video?

I was hoping for a true enthusaist conversation, but was left with an ad for socks.

There was no mention of spring chains nor no mention of why tire chains are no longer recomended for subarus in america (hint: us americans just drive too fast). It was just an ad.

Btw socks aren't the one all solution as suggested in the video. They tend to rip and tear apart after a few uses, which unsurprisingly was information intentionally left out of the video.

Saw these on Amazon and I was kind of skeptical but might give them a try! Interesting piece of technology for sure!

Super cool and great to throw in the trunk for those “oh shoot!” Moments…thanks Matt cool video!

Who would use these? 25 MPH and the slop and mess of installing and uninstalling? How do they even sell enough to be a viable business?

I would be concerned about only running these in the front. Lots of grip in the front and little grip in the rear could cause an oversteer situation.

I live south of Buffalo, NY in the "snow belt" and snow tires are a must. I have pulled many people out of ditches that relied on all season tires. Cheers!
