Superbooth 22: Doctron - Stimming's Instant Mastering Chain

Показать описание
Martin Stimming took time out from his techno and YouTube duties to show off the tiny Instant Mastering Chain, a combination of an eq, a compressor and a drive stage.

It thickens and sweetens incoming signals, with British-style low and high-shelf EQ with dedicated bypass and VCA based bus compressor with feedback and feedforward detector paths giving different characters to the sound. It boasts a Lundahl (r) output transformer with drive and gain reduction knob, and sidechain send / return via 6,3mm stereo jacks. And it only weighs 990g.

Doctron - Stimming's Instant Mastering Chain available now.

Price: 2,500 euros

Even in selling and demoing his own products Martin is really engaging and easy to watch him do his thing. I hope to meet the man some day. His enthusiasm is boundless.

Cool stuff. I admire their excitement and the genuine pride they have for their labor of love. Also, Stimming will always be cool in my book. Such a layed back dude.

this could be a really great option for travelling mix/mastering engineers, and the price is very very good for mastering outboard where cheap (for mastering) gear is easily double the price of this unit, and that's for just one processor while this is two for the price of one. So in other words this is a fraction the price you could expect even from the most affordable mastering gear. Very cool and intriguing

I've never worked with seriously elite (> USD $10, 000) gear but have owned a system made of stuff squarely in the "high-end" range (UREI/Teletronix/API, etc...). One thing I can say for sure is that when you start working with better gear in a good listening environment, it becomes immediately apparent why it costs more -- and to me it becomes apparent that it's worth the extra money for a tool you hear every day. (The original Mackie 1202 EQ is still one of my favorites regardless, but I digress. And of course great art is made with cheap tools all the time.)

For the right person, I feel certain that this is very reasonably priced. And not that it matters: but this guy seems genuinely humble and cool, and excited about what he's doing with his life.

I like how it's now a "saturator" : ))
…because this thing is impossible to get to sound loud without audible distortion.
the term "Mastering Chain" is a bit misleading…
Especially in a live situation, where it needs to be able to handle a wide spectrum of potentially varying levels.
And while playing live, you'd generally be busy playing live, so you would need another person to constantly monitor and re-adjust those drive/threshold dials...

It better sound damn good for that price.

Trident EQ? Very nice, but I think that is kind of an acquired taste?

Also to try on my bass guitar

That's a lot of money to be locked in to a coloured sound especially with the 'Trident' EQ. Rather EQ in the rig and buy an Elysia Xpressor lunchbox for around 750Euro's for compression or even a 'Really Nice Compressor' FMR for around 350Euro's Both are highly regarded in the pro mastering world. Even the Zahl stereo EQ only costs 1800Euro's and is considered one of the best in the industry. It's small, it's made to order so I guess that has some value but there is much better for a lot less out there.
