Rehabilitating Zero the Aggressive Saluki

In our second and third session we begin to resocialise Zero with Chester (Nick's Labrador) and dogs that we meet in the park. For this we used parallel walking and curving to maximise the chance of success.

It also becomes clear that frustration is the cause of Zero's reactivity. Be sure to follow Nick on social media below for more dog training content:

Thank you Nick, this training video with Zero is invaluable! I am a dog walker and often am trying to manage reactive dogs... this video is really helpful! Thanks so much!

As the owner of a very insecure Saluki, this is very inspiring. I don't know if I can get my girl this mellow, but I'll try!

Really good, showing the treatment is the same at the beginning no matter why reactivity is happening.

He is definitely on high alert when walking. I have a Saluki that is a bit reactive. She vill snap at other dogs if they pay attention to her but is ok with dogs that ignore her. They are a challenging breed but very loving.

Hi Nick! Seeing this from a sighthound forum. My dog is reactive to certain dogs...He’s super insecure (not aggressive) and I can read his body language super quickly to know if he’s going to like or dislike, in a matter of seconds. Sometimes it surprises me who he’ll like! Chester looks like a medium size Lab, fixed male. My guy is reactive to big dogs, especially intact makes. How do you guage likability within dogs upon meeting and or in a group intro setting?

I can't walk Grizz anywhere near dogs because he gets crazy because he wants to go play and don't have anyone I could do this with.

He is desensitised, yeah, sure…the problem was and still is - already very good to see in the first video, he is not aggressive, he is annoyed by his owner. She does not want to play, she does not want to run, she does not want to do anything, what a Saluki wants to have! And so he barks on all dogs, get away, I cannot play with you in any way, because I am not allowed to…and that he learnt some maybe years and gets even „aggressive“ by seeing another dog…
…and by the way a Golden Retriever is never a good friend of a Saluki, not for play, not for saying hallo…so what they are doing has nothing to do with a really good and naturally behaved Saluki…sorry, she should get a Chivava or some other pocket dog for showing around but not one that is a real selfcreating hunting sightdog, that needs an owner with class, behaviour, confidence and some action time to time…I am sorry for the Saluki…
At the end, the tail is nearly up, not completely, but somehow more than at the beginning, because they deal with the dog and he his mentally not forced to play on his own…Salukis quite special to train and to have, but very easy to read if you deal with them…could write books to that dog and its behaviour here, it’s so obvious to see…
