In this video we look at how to play the screw back shot in pool (or back spin or the draw shot). The mechanics of how we get the cue ball to spin back after impact with an object ball are explained with practical shots and graphical demonstrations. The shots are carried out on a UK 8 ball table but the same principles apply to both american pool and snooker.

Thank you for the tutorial! For years screw back shot is one of my weakness. Turns out i’ve been using the wrong technique to execute the screw shot. Got my sub man. Cheers!

If the cue ball is slightly smaller than the other balls, which is the case in a lot of 8-ball clubs, then the screw back is more pronounced. So it doesn't take much power at all to get a lot of screw back, even over longer distances. Conversely getting the cue ball to run through is harder and takes a lot more top spin.

can you teach proper jump shots? so far what i do is try something similar to a wrong back spin shot, with the cue up, but it kinds of "spoon" the cue ball, which is not correct, and also kind of mess with aiming a little. Thanks in advance!

i am having trouble with my screw back shot. Thinking it may be that i use a very wide tip on my cue stick.

I get all the screw back I want on a pool table but hardly any on a snooker table, is that because of the baize ?

for me the ball just slides with no spin. Side and top spin is easier. Using a 2inch cue ball with house cue 11mm tips.
