Video Game Genres: Everything You Need to Know

Words like FPS, RPG, MMO and MOBA get thrown around all the time, but not everyone knows what they actually mean. In this video, we explain some of the major gaming genres and how they differ from those similar to them, e.g. MMO vs MMORPG etc.

I get confused when it comes to action game genres . Like 3rd person hack and slash and 3rd person action games. Eg comparing god of war 2005 to a game like ninja gaiden 2 or metal gear rising. Or when it comes to a specific sub genre like jsut cause 3 a 3rd person action open world shooter

I'd argue MMO is not a genre in itself, but rather a genre qualifier (MMORPG, MMORTS, etc.)

I don't think the information on the whole "fantasy setting" defining MMORPGs is particularly accurate. Though there aren't many, there have been MMORPGs situated in more realistic settings like Shin Megami Tensei Imagine (set in post-apocalyptic tokyo) or king of fighters world which takes place in SNK's in-universe version of the real world. Generally speaking it makes a lot more sense to define a gaming genre through its mechanics than doing it through its plot/setting.
