Park on a level surface… and open the hood.
The air filter housing is on the driver’s side of the engine bay, and is secured by four bolts.
Use a ratchet with an 8mm socket and extension to remove the bolts.
Lift the lid off the housing.
Remove the old filter.
Clean any leaves or debris from the inside of the housing.
Install your new air filter, making sure it’s properly seated.
Reinstall the housing lid by sliding its tabs into place… then replace the four bolts.
Close the hood…

I worked at Ford Engine Design in Dearborn back in the early 90's and one thing they taught us was to design for serviceability. They still haven't learned that at Ford. I have always changed my air filtters on my cars and I never had a problem. My last car had 4 spring clips that you just unsnapped and took the cover off. Took me less than 3 minutes to change the filter. I changed the air filter in my 2019 Ford Escape today, and although it wasn't a major operation, it wasn't easy. There was one bolt on the back right (as you are facing the engine compartment) that was deep and hard to get to. I had to find an extension for my socket and it was barely long enough. First I had trouble getting the cover hole and bolt hole aligned when replacing the cover, then the socket unsnapped and fell down below the filter frame somewhere. I couldn't see it and finally gave up looking. Took the car out for a rough ride hoping it would fall out. It was also hard to align the cover so that you could get the bolts back in. I guess I spent 20 minutes farting around with this and chasing down the tools I needed. Also, I've change a lot of batteries in my life, but I wouldn't even attempt it on the Escape. Looks like it would be a major operation.

I broke my Air Filter Clips on the Air Filter box trying to force the Air Filter into the unit. Following day, I removed the cover again and used a Grease on the filter lip and on the intake flue. It went in like a glove. I used Easy Grease ‘Easy Grease Spray Lubricant Synthetic Oil Waterproof Rust Protection’ from Amazon but you can possible use any other which can withstand -20 to +120 degrees. PS mine was original Volvo Filter. Same recommendation applies for Ford and others.

It's not that simple. Wish there was some help on tricks or how to tell if it's seated back correctly. That's the trick. Not twisting bolts
