Larian's Science Fiction Game

Swen Vincke has not been shy about letting us know about the next game Larian is working on and it is almost certainly science fiction but it will also be a brand new IP so how will it fare vs. a D&D empowered Baldur's Gate 3? Let's talk about!

So I notice a lot of people are talking about Star Wars and Starfinder and other IPs in the realm of science fiction, however those IPs are owned and published by companies other than Larian. It is important to bear in mind that it is incredibly unlikely that Larian will ever work with a foreign publisher again so probably best not to think of all these IPs and instead look forward to Larian's homebrew sci-fi game.

Larian had become one of those studios that compels you to pay attention no matter what they're doing. They've earned it.

I think you are right. It might be why Swen emphasized that this game will be difficult to pull off; that said, I hope they do! I truly wonder what a Larian Sci-Fi game would look like!

When I played BG3, some sections (the beginning for example) really felt like stylized Sci-Fi sections which they nailed. So, can't wait.

I prefer my RPGs to be fantasy, however, ironically my favorite video game of all time is Mass Effect so I’m excited! Love Larian!

I hope they make them and enjoy doing it. Working on your own IP can be fun and rewarding. I can't wait to see what they do next!

I’m glad Larian got into their groove and folks have them on their radars now. Looking forward to any game they put out.

In fact almost all the locations in the City of BG were described in Descent to Avernus and almost the entire backstory and some characters (Ulder Ravengard for example). there is also a minor adventure module “murder in Baldur’s Gate” which is also backstory for BG3. That doesn’t mean a whole new “world” from Larian would be bad — far from it. But BG3 is not an example of that.

I think we definetly need more good Sci Fi RPGs and I believe Larian are more than capable to deliver that.

I think Larian knows that it was the D&D backing that pushed their game into the spotlight & gave it that big hit of popullarity. But having said that, they were coming off of great success with Original Sin 2. Not as big, but still good. I'm sure that their intention is to take advantage of the spotlight while its still shining on them. They know that many more people are aware of Larian studios now, and will check in on whatever they make next, so now is exactly the time to try making something of their own again. They have a much better chance of success on an unknown IP now than they would have before.

I like fantasy and sci-fi. I love Mass Effect and am highly looking forward to Exodus at the moment. So if Larian goes sci-fi, I'm good with that.

Larian could announce a first person shooter game and I would still be excited. Larian is what BioWare used to be.
