KARATE KID: LEGENDS TRAILER + OFFICIAL PLOT DETAILS

During the Sony Pictures Panel at NYCC 2024, Sony dropped an exclusive first look trailer of ‘KARATE KID: LEGENDS’ to the audience in attendance. Unfortunately they didn’t reveal footage, but we do know what was shown in the trailer thanks to multiple sources Variety and Deadline who reported on the exact trailer details. There’s some very interesting developments made from the footage shown so let’s break it down!

Decades after their legendary 1984 All Valley Karate Tournament clash, Johnny Lawrence and Daniel LaRusso find themselves on opposite ends of life's spectrum. A down-on-his-luck Johnny attempts redemption by reopening the infamous Cobra Kai dojo, reigniting his old rivalry with the now-successful Daniel. This, however, reignites old tensions and ignites a new generation of fighters.

Cobra Kai, created by Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz, and Hayden Schlossberg, is a sequel to the beloved Karate Kid films. Originally a Youtube Red/Premium series, it shifted to Netflix for later seasons. The series is produced by Sony Pictures Television and takes place roughly between 2017 and 2019.

The show offers a fresh perspective on the "Miyagi-verse" through Johnny's eyes. It explores the consequences of unresolved conflict and the complexities of good versus bad. While Johnny and Daniel remain the central characters, the series also features a talented young cast including Xolo Maridueña, Tanner Buchanan, Mary Mouser, and Jacob Bertrand. Familiar faces from the Karate Kid films, like Martin Kove and Thomas Ian Griffith, also return.

I’m not sure how good this movie will be, but I’m excited for it. The original Karate Kid is my favorite movie of all time, and Jackie Chan is my favorite actor of all time. It will be cool just to see Chan and Macchio together on screen.

But remember the original MiYagi was fishing and got lost in china and came back with Chinese wife and brought back karate to Okinawa. So the Miyagi family are both Okinawan and Chinese descent. Mr. Han has to be related to MiYagi on his grandmother’s side.

0:35 : There’s a paragraph above the one you start with in the variety article where it says that Daniel arrives in Beijing where Mr Han has been seeking him out. So it seems like Mr Han has heard of Daniel very curious how he knows of Daniel.

I'll give the film a fair viewing, since we know Ralph is extremely protective of the original films' legacy and wouldn't sign on if he suspected the new film would hurt that legacy. I'm curious as to how Daniel-san's presence in Beijing is going to be explained...on first reaction, it sounds bizarre. Maybe the film will provide some exploration of _how_ Miyagi-Do karate came from China in the 16th century, along with more of Shimpo Sensei's backstory.

My theory is that shimpo sensei learned kung fu from an ancestor of Mr. Han, and over hundreds of years of evolution it has turned into something entirely unique from Kung Fu. This movie still feels like a weird concept imo but I’m going to try and keep an open mind

The Deadline synopsis actually has me excited! It's all in the "When families unite, a new legend is born" tag. Remember in the first two movies, when Mr. Miyagi said his ancestor went to China and brought back "Karate" and a Chinese wife to Okinawa? What if the martial arts style he brought was Mr. Han's family Kung Fu style, Han Chuan (Han Fist) which he would eventually create Miyagi-do Karate from, and what if the Chinese wife were a Han family member, which would be Mr. Han's ancestor. That would make Mr. Han and Mr. Miyagi related by blood in a very plausible way! I think it's going to be awesome to see how this plays out!

2. With a badass icon like Ming Na Wen in this, I hope they give her a little action to do

Since the original movies are so close to my heart especially because since cobra kai fixed the 3rd movie i really don't like the idea that this will most likely be tied into the movies if you wanted to do that then tie it into the Miyagi spin off show not the movies

Yeah I really don’t know how to feel about this movie at all I was super hype to hear about it at first but I have bad feeling this gonna ruin the whole karate kid universe and myagi lore cobra Kai is enough and plays a perfect sequel and conclusion to the original films keepin it’s roots and connections to more iconic characters like Johnny and Daniel etc while bringing in a new generation of karate kids learning from myagi teachings and other cobra Kai. With the whole a new family begins thing give me a bad feeling some how some way this film will introduce the next family wich will replace the myagi one wich scares me can’t lie
