Odd, rare train. This is a maintenance of way train. It is used for digging ditches. There is a track hoe on the train. It is being transported on a Norfolk Southern train to its owner. This train is in Ludlow, Kentucky on the Cincinnati owned Rat Hole Line.

Filmed in 1080p with 30fps

Thanks for watching! If you have time, please watch another video of mine to help keep my channel going. Every view helps support my channel. Viewing time helps pay for gas, motels, rental cars etc. I have a list of places that I plan on filming so watch another video of mine if you have the time.

Specialized M of W equipment. Leased to railroads for engineering use. This one can pick up or distribute track material. The track hoe runs inside the articulated gons.

If i remember right, there was a couple videos of that train in action where it was seen loading and unloading railroad ties and sleepers onto the side of track maintaince sites (don't remembr if it was a clip from Virtual Railfan's Grab bag or from someone else.) The locomotive looks like it might be rebuilt from an old switcher (maybe an SW series from the short wheel base and fuel tanks), but it's been changed so much that it's hard to tell

It doesn't look the newest nor did they make this a big seller but on the arm of the crane\back hoe you can make out GREX which is Georgetown Railroad services and is better known for their long conveyor belt cars to distribute ballast or do undercutting. This looks more like a distribution or reclamation train for spikes ties angle iron Etc. The locomotive and that term is pretty loose is riding on EMD switcher trucks like an SW1500. Sure hope somebody else can add light to this home built contraption

We use to call these mow being “hauled on rear” cars a “ slot ditcher” and we used our own engines when working these ditchers and their primary use was for ditching along the r-o-w…., not sure because of the video if the engine seen here was associated with the slot ditcher or was another “haul on rear” piece of equipment…..ms~~~

In the UK it's PWM - permanent way maintenance.

Nice video of a work train probably headed back to a supply yard to get more supplies to repair damaged sections or maybe even heading to a derailment.

I saw one like that in Tucson awhile back. It was placing large riprap rocks around drain culverts and stuff like that.

The used one like this in Springfield, Tn, 15 years ago, when they added 3 miles of passing track.

That's for dropping off bundles of new Ties on the side of the track and picking up old tires and Hauling them off

I'm not sure where it's going but the cars that have an excavator on it or used for carrying lumber for the tracks that the train runs on

I can’t predict the future but this locomotive may be converted to battery powered.
