This is an NPC that I've made and animated, cheap to use for a limited time. Features:
- Follows the nearest player it detects.
- Backs up if the player it's following gets too close
- Always looks at the player it's following
- Runs/Sprints towards the player it's following, if they're too far away.

thank you for this and i wish you add more modes to it such as idle, (roaming around using pathfinding and stuff) hostile, uses its pathfinding to track the player down and try to attack it etc.

I think what could be changed to make it feel more realistic is that you have to get uncomfortably close before he'll step back a few steps (kinda like hl2)

You could try to make an NPC that’s advanced in combat. For example if the player keeps there distance to much it plays more aggressive and uses ranged attacks. And if the player is too aggressive it goes on the defensive and tries to bait you or evades around you.

great concept, i'd recommend you also add more modes to it. let me give you some ideas:

wander: (uses pathfinding and AI to roam around, great for city settings)
enemy: (using pathfinding to reach the player and attempt causing damage, great for horror / minigames)
follow: kinda what the video shows
and yeah

why is there no tutorial videos on how to make a npc run back away from the player if its being followed ? for shooter games with npcs its so useful because making it run away from the player actually makes sense

1 more sub for this guy before 900. Also, how about an npc that you can talk to, but reacts differently to certain items you hold (would only work for 1 player probably).

This is kinda like pikmin minus the running away, you have to get close enough to get them to come to you.
