This movie has one of the best endings ever. I saw it in the theater and I didn't see it coming. There's a lot of layers to it, too. His self-sacrifice is in vain, and part of the message of the film IMO is that evil will always continue on in the world whether we throw ourselves on the sword or not.

Saw this movie for the first time as a wee boy. Watched it with my old man. This was the first movie I’d ever seen where the bad guy won at the end. And then ‘Sympathy for the Devil’ kicked in which gave me a wee half smile on my face as my old man was an 80s kid and a massive Guns N’ Roses fan, so instantly I knew the song and the meaning behind it. Watched it for the first time in over 20 years just last night and that same half smile came on my face again. Criminally underrated.

Saw this movie on TV in a hotel maybe 20 years ago and never knew what it was called until today.
This ending has stuck with me for two decades.
