There is now a new update and no additional hardware is required! I just tried it and it worked! You can now pair your airpods with the Nintendo Switch Lite (NSL) directly. Just put the airpods in the case and put the case in pairing mode (blinking light) via holding the back button a couple of seconds. It should appear in the NSL bluetooth setup finder👍🏼

According to retailers and the official Nintendo website the LITE has bluetooth 4.1
