From historical decisions affecting infrastructure to present-day issues like corruption and bureaucratic hurdles, the story of Romania's roads is one of struggle and slow progress.

🛣️ Join us as we explore the roots of the problem dating back to the 1970s when economic decisions during Ceausescu's regime set the stage for today's road woes. Discover how a focus on repaying debt rather than internal development led to a decline in infrastructure, impacting not only roads but also the once-thriving train system.

🚂 Learn about the decline of trains in Romania and the subsequent rise of the car revolution. Find out why Romania, despite the need for better roads, lags behind its neighbors in highway development. Explore the ambitious Romanian General Transport Master Plan of 2015 and the challenges faced in its execution, from tough geography to bureaucratic hurdles.

🏞️ Understand why Romania's geography poses a challenge, especially in building roads through the Carpathian Mountains. Delve into the financial aspects, with Romania now allocating more funds but struggling with inefficient use and higher construction costs compared to neighboring countries.

🏛️ Uncover the government's indecision on road priorities, exemplified by the A0 highway saga, and the legal battles that ensued. Discover the ongoing challenges in organizing Bucharest's A0 ring road and the delays in its completion.

🔍 Despite the hurdles, get a glimpse of optimism as we discuss progress on the A1 and A7 highways, with expectations for completion by 2028 and 2025-2026, respectively. However, the road ahead is not without debates and concerns.

A bit exagerated. As a Scot living in Romania (Cluj area), I can definitely say that the roads in Romania are of better quality than in Scotland.

Most major cities in Transylvania are connected by motorways now and by 2030, there'll be easily 2000km of motorways..

I have been to Hungary a week ago, from Romania (Cluj) to Budapest, and i can say that most of their roads except the highways, are way way worse than Romania’s. The highways are similar though.

2:55 - “One of Europe’s poorest countries” ???? There are at least 15 european countries poorer than Romania.

As a Romanian who went this summer to Greece by car and passed through Bulgaria, i can say that Romanian roads are waaaay better. indeed we have fewer km of highways, but the quality is vastly better. Indeed we need more. but this video is way too pessimistic. There are a lot of ongoing projects right now. when they will be finished we will sigh in relief. there may be some corruption of course(Valid for Majority of West countries, but it does not get this press since it's the west). don't be fooled. corruption is everywhere, but some are better at hiding it

I wouldn't call Romania one of the poorest countries in Europe anymore. It definitely used to be. Bit it has significantly developed in recent years. Even in the EU, Bulgaria is the poorest country, where things actually aren't going so well. Romania has almost caught up to Hungary too, and nobody calls Hungary a poor country. 30 to 20 years ago this was unthinkable, but here we are.

Romania has 1008.9 km executed and 768.3 km under construction, highways and express roads. Other km are being designed. Corruption (all incompetents were employed by the state on a shoestring) was the main reason why we were left behind. The national anti-corruption directorate had good results in the fight against corruption. Laura Codruta Kovesi is one of the best-known anti-corruption prosecutors in Romania

There is a law in Romania, especially crafted to perpetuate this situation.
The law concerns the feasibility study for every public work, and, once it is obtained, that feasibility study lasts exactly 2 years. They do everything to make that term pass, and thus another feasibility study is needed. Of course that study requires money, and every single word in the new study is the perfect copy of the previous one.
Romanian government members make everything to award these studies to their friend and relatives.

I wish Romania followed at least partly the success of my country Poland. In 1995 we had only 440 km of highways and motorways, in 2000 - 590 km, in 2005 - 850 km, in 2010 - 1560 km, in 2015 - 3130 km, in 2020 - 4340 km and now 5115 km, more than for example the UK. Of course it is easier to build motorways here but we do need some tunnels too like the one in Warsaw (2335 metres long, opened in 2021) or another one south of Kraków (2058 m long opened in 2022). Six more tunnels longer than 500 metres are under construction.

Well, our train network won't be replaced, thankfully. Not only we build highways, but we also modernize the important train lines that are part of the TEN-T rail network programme. (e.g. the M300 line is currently in modernization)

People forget Romania has similar mountain territory as Switzerland. Germany, Poland most have flat surfaces. And Romania finally reached 1000km highways. They will have over 2000km by 20230.

What about Bechtel? They were supposed to build some highways in Romania but they took the money and never built anything.

I don't get it why get rid of the train network??? Switzerland is one of the richest countries on the planet and they heavily depend on the train system and they're building more tracks

Transfagarasan Highway was built for the army to pass the Carpathians fast in case of a russian invasion in the Cold War whilst the mountains were a natural stronghold. It was a defensive strategic project, it wasn't a case of flex...

Let me clear something about Moldova: there is a region of Romania called Moldova and there is country next to it called Moldova. A7 connects Moldova the region with the southern part Romania .A8 will connects Transilvania with Moldova the country(by passing Moldova country region)

the authors mistake Romanian Moldova (Western Moldavia) for Republic of Moldova (Eastern Moldavia) when presenting A7. Guys, a little bit of history, fortunately in 1812 Russia couldn't conquer the whole of Moldavia

also as a romanian i felt a little bit mocked when he said the poorest countries of Europe, when in fact, i bet that romanians have a lot more money and better quality of life then some countries from west. we don't get mass illegal imigration, our streets are mainly clean across country, we rarely get stabbings, or terrorist attacks etc. if you look on the streets you will see a lot of expensive cars, we have a very high property ownership rate(maybe the highest or in top of europe) and so on. i think this guy who made the video is rehashing some old info. even the voice is AI.

Being Bulgarian I think we beat our dear neighbours in bad roads. They have better trains, better airports and already advanced Bulgaria. Hungary and north Serbia both have much less mountains. Much easier. Bulgaria has 39 mountains lol just to give you an example. We also have a natural "expensive" boundary which is the Danube and we shamelessy have only 2 bridges. Netherlands has its highest "mountain" of 300m...just saying...while BG and RO full of difficult terrains.
