The fruit is the embodiment of destruction and WB never wanted to destroy, he wanted to have a family. He never was in sync with his fruit. He understood it's power but probably never cared about it too much. That's why I belive he never awakened it.

I imagine the awakened aspect of his devil fruit was about the control. Any fucker can blast off massive earthquakes but, as Blackbeard showed during Marineford, control is the main weakness of that fruit.

Maybe the awakening was to be able to use the ability in a more specific area. He was able to smash Akainu into the ground and it didn’t affect that much space. Meanwhile, if we look at the times Blackbeard uses it, it’s always a big, widespread area

Well, while this did happen before awakened Devil Fruits were really a thing in the series, it is feasible that he did unlock all of his potential at some point.
But it's also in character for him to show restraint like that, for as he himself said so many years ago, "You can't go out into this world without a code of conduct."
Whitebeard wasn't a saint (and thank feck for that.), but like Kuma, he was a powerful person with a mind for the future, and can be as gentle as...well, as gentle as you can be being an overpowered giant with the Devil Fruit Imu WISHES he could have.

I wonder if his awakened form actually did have the power to destroy the world, as his fruit was stated to be able to do, but he never used it's awakened abilities for that reason. This could mean that if Black Beard ever learned to awaken it he could put the whole planet in danger. (I don't know much about awakening fruits so I might just be out here yapping)

I think his awaked ability would more like laws Awakening then doffys and katakuris paramecia Awakening acting more like laws by adding an extra ability that we all assumed he couldve done normally, i think his Awakening was him being able to cause actual earthquakes in the area and not just cracks, these earthquakes would be invisible but start crushing everyone in the area from the inside and out, but obv he cant use that ability in marineford bc of all his sons and alliances and also it wouldve probably been that powerful he couldn't control whos affected so ace would've died regardless if he used it.
