Further in depth... light blocking should be placed over both photodiodes. Focusing the leds would allow for greater distance sensing. Using all ir emitters and a transistor on the recieving end will allow for detecting a range of distances. Pulsing (555) the emitter and measuring the time between pulse and reception (555) would further enhance the resolution and with distance and signal strength the reflectivity can be measured. Multiple colors of led also indicates the color of the object and what colors reflect off of it. More of these circuits in and radial array can be used for object avoidance.

Mine is UGLY, but I believe I followed correctly. Doesn't work. The LED does light up if I touch where the 2 transistors are soldered together. Forgive me. I'm not good with this stuff. I know that we humans do have some natural resistance and capacitance so one of those 2 things in my body makes the LED light up. There's no sensing or detection happening tho. Help!
