The difference is they came back to play the same character. Not a completely different character!

John used to say: Never put the actor before the character. This is clearly putting the actor before the character. It's not even about getting a classic villain the attention he deserves. It's about RDJ. Not Doom.

Honestly the backlash has nothing to do with RDJ and his ability. We all know he can absolutely kill this role. 10 years of him becoming synonmous with Ironman is where I think people are resistant because the time and frankly the emotions we all felt at the END OF Endgame.

Even if RDJ and the Russos pull it off, it still reduces the character of Dr. Doom and his rich history to a gimmick for a variant. It seems desperate because it doesn't show much thought put into it.

John Campea had turned 180 degrees and lost my respect. He used to believe the story comes first; you DONT pander to the actor! You DON'T make the story fit the actor. Now is a completely different tune. Campea is so full of shitself.

All the examples you’re giving John like Hugh Jackman coming back, Tobey Maguire playing Spider-Man, Han Solo making his return, the one thing all those characters have in common is that they’re being played by the same actor who has played the same character, not an actor who has played a character for over 15 years to now play another iconic character in the same industry. That’s why it feels like a desperate move.

Bringing actors to play the same role is not the same as bringing RDJ back to play a whole new character (or variant..either way). Just feels like a huge missed oppurtunity to actually progress the MCU somewhere new and fun.

Having a new actor to play Doom would be more of a "Risk" than RDJ. It looks desperate because Marvel is trying to play it safe given the state of the MCU. They feel bringing RDJ back is their best shot at Having a successful Avengers movie in my opinion

If they brought him back as Iron Man, no one would be batting an eyelid.
It is a move of desperation, they had so many actors that could've took that role.

Tobey McGuire and Andrew Garfield were reprising their characters in smaller supporting roles, and it was largely kept secretive. Harrison Ford and Mark Hamill returning as Han Solo and Luke Skywalker didn’t get much backlash because they were making a direct sequel to their own movie as their original characters. People did give some backlash to Hugh Jackman returning as Wolverine when it was first announced because it did have a hint of desperation, and it’s just forgotten now because of how successful the movie has been. If you don’t think there is any desperation to Marvel Studios bringing back RDJ to play an entirely “new” character, then you’re outright delusional.

Cmon John. It is a desperate move and everyone knows it. Your argument about no one saying anything when Tobey and Andrew showed up in NWH is invalid because at that point, the MCU was in a good state and an overall positive track record. All of the MCU Spiderman movies up to that point have done well and adding Tobey + Andrew to NWH was just pure fan service to add pop to the movie. The same can be said for Harrison Ford. He was added as fan service but his CHARACTER played a narrative purpose to the movie. They could have casted anyone else as Doctor Doom but decided to play it safe by asking RDJ to come back because they know what he brings to the table. He'll make them money. NOT SAYING Im not excited about RDJ being back, I just think your argument isn't very thought out.

The reason no one said “desperate” for any of those other characters is because none of those actors characters died. This is the first time they’ve brought back the same actor to play two different roles, one of which was killed. Now it may pay off and it may not but this absolutely feels like a desperation grab for hype knowing that almost everything after Endgame has been failing miserably minus a couple movies.
