American tipping culture is insane. Pay your employees a proper wage and add a service charge to the bill.

In Japan it is so service oriented that they get offended if you try to tip. They all get a flat hourly wage and the best service is expected.

The problem is that when a 'tip' becomes standard or expected then it negates the very reason that people leave a tip. A tip is traditionally a thank you for service that went above and beyond what was expected, is a tip is standard then the customer is expected to reward poor service.

Tipping should not be mentioned ANYWHERE. Tips should be out of all work policy and only genuinely exist when a customer wants to give someone a tip.

As a Brit when visiting restaurants and bars in the states I feel embarrassed that my tip is their wages. A tip should be a thank-you for above normal service at the diners discretion

Once I got taken 20% of my bill taken out of my debit card by a restaurant for a tip plus a 4% for living expenses at Sam Francisco California. Since then. I don’t tip whatsoever. And now I cook at home with better ingredients, in a cleaner kitchen, and overall healthier.

I worked in restaurant for almost ten years, I've never once seen waitresses being forced to pay out other employees from a non existent tip. I'm calling cap on this one

Tips shouldn’t be expected! You give a tip when you’re happy with the service as a way to say thank you.

I remember when tipping was whatever you wanted to pay. Not a percentage. The better the service, the higher the tip. Not a mandantory percentage.

In the UK, tipping is totally optional. The servers etc. earn a reasonable amount and don't depend on tipping to make up their wages. That way, the tip is a real reward for very good service.
