The key to this trick is right at the beginning: it's a "mentalist" exercise; you have to "think differently". As a warm-up, try making two fists, then take your time & extend left index + right pinky. (Don't worry if they're not simultaneous at first, you'll get there.) Now forget what you just did & make two fists again, then take your time again & extend right index & left pinky. Keep alternating, but thinking of each "half" as a complete motion unto itself.
Finally, skip the fist-making steps, extend one index + opposite pinky, focus on the two extended fimgertips, and Don't think about right vs left. Instead notice those fingertips as the ends of a Diagonal! Now exchange one diagonal for the the other, as if you're making two crossed lines to form the letter "Χ". Repeat indefinitely, keeping your focus as long as you can.
(The whole process will likely take less time than it did to read this comment, and if it doesn't, that's okay too.)
