As my father says, “friends are friends but business is business.” Always be cautious of loaning out money.

Last November I bought a used 2020 loaded SUV, and after selling my hatchback instead of trading it in, I paid a grand total of $17, 287 … in cash, because I’d been setting aside my last “car payment” every month for 7.5 years after paying off my hatchback in 2015. I plan on having this SUV for at least another 7 years, and I’ll do the same thing again. Why? Cuz now I have everything paid off, not losing money to interest rates, and I’ve been able to semi retire, working only 2 nights a week (12 hr shifts), and the rest of the week I do what I want. Only bills I have are taxes, utilities, and insurance (not including food/clothing, and stuff for my dogs). I’m ahead of the game, and still putting money aside for retirement, cuz I don’t need flashy, I just need reliability

Great advice. I wish this was said when I was younger. It sucks when you hit 40 and you are just starting to live cuz you made them mistakes.

Yes to #1. I also keep in mind that if I "loan" a loved one money, I accept that they will never pay it back and consider it a gift. Never tell that you consider it a gift though. If I never hear from them again ... 😂

I’m 35 and I’ve been hauling ass saving every payday. My 20’s was very ghetto 😂 I did not save anything, but years later I have a paid off car, credit cards and working on paying off my student loan. I give myself “fun” money within reason and save the rest for my emergency fund.

You never give, expecting to receive back. Just be a giver if you choose to.

Facts with #1. My husbands family asked for money and never even bothered to include me in the discussion. I separated my bank account after that. My money is solely mine.

I heard this a long time ago and wish I heard it in my 20’s. Live life in your 20’s like no one else so you can live life in your 30’s like no one else. Meaning work hard and don’t party in your 20’s so you have money in your 30’s.

#1 was a life saver for me as a receiver. I kicked ass & lost sleep getting that $$ paid back quickly..

I worked so much that after covid my life got out of control. I no longer enjoyed doing things. I was too busy maintaining and organizing it. I put everything on auto pilot. I'm scared to figure it out. I'm just getting started. Maybe acknowledging how much money I'm hemorrhaging by not wanting to deal with it will motivate me and waiting on companies to process things.

I learned number 1 (when i was 20 yo) from my friend who was a cop. He said, “if you loan out money, don’t expect it back”. So far, I’ve been asked twice in my life and they did pay me back and we’re still friends.
