Peacemaker’s second-best-best friend, after Eagly of course, Vigilante lives for the thrill of the (crime) fight. With a somewhat unhinged penchant for shooting bad guys, blowing stuff up, creating as much mayhem as possible, Vigilante has been in serious kickass withdrawal in the years that Peacemaker’s been locked up at Belle Reve. But now that he’s back, they’ve got to make up for lost time. Although he’s got a sense of humor, he seems to lack real human emotion. And although he’d never reveal his secret identity (even under extreme torture), he works as a busboy at Fennel Fields Mediterranean restaurant.

Peacemaker is an American superhero television series created by James Gunn for the streaming service HBO Max (later renamed Max), based on the DC Comics character of the same name. The first season is the only DC Extended Universe (DCEU) television series and a spin-off from the 2021 film The Suicide Squad. Set after the events of the film, it further explores jingoistic mercenary Christopher Smith / Peacemaker. It was produced by the Safran Company and Troll Court Entertainment in association with Warner Bros. Television and with Gunn as showrunner. The second season is produced by DC Studios and set in the DC Universe (DCU), a "soft reboot" of the DCEU.

John Cena stars as the title character, reprising his role from The Suicide Squad, with Danielle Brooks, Freddie Stroma, Chukwudi Iwuji, Jennifer Holland, Steve Agee, and Robert Patrick also starring. Gunn conceived Peacemaker after noting Cena's strength as a dramatic actor while filming The Suicide Squad and wrote the first season while finishing that film. HBO Max ordered it straight-to-series. Filming took place in Vancouver, Canada, with Gunn directing five episodes. He chose to use hair metal songs for the series' soundtrack, including "Do Ya Wanna Taste It" by Wig Wam for the opening titles dance sequence. A second season was ordered in February 2022, with Gunn again writing all episodes. The season was integrated with the DCU after Gunn was named co-CEO of DC Studios. Filming began in April 2024 at Trilith Studios in Atlanta, Georgia.

Peacemaker premiered on HBO Max with its first three episodes. The other five episodes of the first season were released weekly until February 17. Viewership increased with each episode and the season received positive reviews. The second season will be released on Max in 2025. The series has been nominated for several awards, including a Primetime Creative Arts Emmy Award. A spin-off series, Waller, is in development as part of the DCU.

The post-Crisis version of Peacemaker differs greatly from the pre-Crisis version of the character. Smith learns that his peace-through-violence efforts were the result of a serious mental illness brought on by the shame of having a Nazi death camp commandant for a father, Wolfgang Schmidt. He believes his father's spirit haunts him continually and criticizes his every move, even as he tries to live down his past.

Becoming a particularly deadly vigilante who would kill at the slightest provocation, he begins to believe that the ghosts of the people he killed, or who were killed in his vicinity, are collected inside his helmet and can offer him advice and commentary. For a time, the Peacemaker serves as a U.S. government agent under the auspices of Checkmate, a special-forces unit, hunting down terrorists until his own behavior becomes too extreme. Peacemaker plays a part in the Janus Directive and battles Adrian Chase / Vigilante.[7] Although he is seen as a helpful ally, some of the other heroes think that he is too extreme to be helping them out. He eventually crashes a helicopter to destroy tanks controlled by the supervillain Eclipso and is reported dead.[8] His soul shows up in the realm of Purgatory in the Day of Judgment series. A team of heroes has shown up to recruit the soul of Hal Jordan. The guardians of Purgatory do not like this and Peacemaker, along with other dead vigilantes, rally and provide enough of a distraction so the group could return to Earth.

Peacemaker is the name of a series of fictional characters originally owned by Charlton Comics and later acquired by DC Comics. The original Peacemaker first appeared in Fightin' 5 #40 and was created by writer Joe Gill and artist Pat Boyette.

John Cena portrayed the Christopher Smith version of Peacemaker in the DC Extended Universe film The Suicide Squad and the eponymous television series on HBO Max.

James gunn knows how to adapt a character, makes the changes necessary, while still keeping the core elements of what made that character unique in the comics.

I’ll never forgive marvel for what they did to taskmaster.

They really thread the needle between looking bad-ass and looking like some doofus made his own costume. Kind of amazing.

Fantastic actor, character and costume design. Would happily watch a Vigilante spin-off.

One benefit of using these obscure characters is it takes off the load from the design team, while giving writers freedom to change the character.

Vigilante in the comics was alive for like 3 IRL years, and was pretty much just Punisher with a mask on. He was NOTHING like he is in the show, and he's better in the show for it.

That concept art looks like character bio art from Arkham Asylum.
