I wonder if another way of looking at detachment is God separating us from the idols in our lives? Things like money, power, prestige can have a strong hold on us and can become a source of focus for us rather than a focus on God. Anyway these are just some thoughts.

"Striving for Happiness" to me, always sounds like "Fighting for Peace"...an oxymoron. Ever tried to get someone or an animal to like you? They seem to do the opposite, that is, move away or worse, get annoyed with you. Ever done the opposite and ignored them? You somehow become attractable. It's a weird paradox, but it has been talked about in psychology for a while now that "happiness" is a by-product and arrives in it's own good time when you let go of attachment and wanting things to be a certain way.
