What's NEW with the DJI Mavic Pro, Alpine White, and Platinum for 2018

Hey, what’s going on everybody it’s your favorite introvert here and today we will be taking a look at what all is new with the DJI Mavic Pro lineup for 2018. This will cover most of the major changes and feel free to use the links below to view the particular Mavic that interests you.

So, the DJI Mavic Pro is a small, powerful drone. Its compact size offers one of the most portable drone options on the market and the features baked in to the Mavic put the drone, in my opinion leaps and bounds beyond any other drone company out in the market space today. 24 high-performance computing cores, an at the time all-new transmission system with a 4.3mi range, 5 vision sensors, and 3-axis, 4K camera continues to be my most used drone in the house. This thing has taken a beating been repaired but DJI and returned for more. It just doesn’t quit. This is my favorite drone!
The Mavic Pro Alpine White edition was released during the holiday season of 2017 and advertised as limited edition but surprise to very little it is still for sale and doesn’t appear to be all that limited. There is no overall improvement to this edition of Mavic only the color separates it from its older brother, but I must admit it looks really cool fly around!

The Mavic Pro Platinum, released back in August 2017, features a sleek design and compact body and sports a new and improved 30-minute flight time coupled with 60% noise power reduction.
With these new aerodynamic designs of the 8331 propellers, and the new FOC ESC drivers give the Mavic Pro Platinum an improved noise control performance. While the Alpine white edition was released more recently than the Platinum edition, the Platinum is the latest improved version of the DJI’s Mavic lineup. I do feel, however, these redesigns are more gimmicky and not worth the additional price of a new drone upgrade, but if I had a choice of one drone as a new entry to the drone market, this would be a great first drone.
As for what’s new in 2018, Of course, there are rumors that the release on the 23rd will in-fact be the Mavic Air. Which is thought to be a slimmer, more streamlined and powerful version of the current Mavic Pro. We shall soon see what DJI’s next entry in the drone market will be and I’m sure it will be a huge success.

• So for the Firmware we currently sit as of January 11th 2018
• Firmware : v01.04.0200
• DJI GO 4 App iOS : v4.1.22
• DJI GO 4 App Android : v4.1.22

So What’s New? Well, Pano photos are able to be viewed through the DJI Goggles, and DJI has Optimized the startup music for Mavic Pro Platinum.

This firmware is also an update for DJI Goggles:
• Added support for playing local videos, viewing local Pano photos, and downloading and viewing Pano photos from Mavic Pro. So nothing all that spectacular. One thing to note with this udate is that once the firmware has been updated, it cannot be downgraded to a former version. A Restart to the aircraft and remote controller will be required after upgrade is complete.
• Also, this firmware update may reset various Main Controller Settings, such as the RTH Altitude and Maximum Flight Distance, to factory defaults. So be aware of that and check your settings. As always if the firmware upgrade fails, restart aircraft, remote controller and DJI GO 4 or DJI Assistant 2, and try again.
As far as what I can tell in the app itself connected to the Mavic looks similar. I do find it a surprise that the Mavic has more flight modes than the Spark.. It actually has the Flight modes the Spark originally was released with but can no longer support. All in all this is a less than exciting update as far as firmware is concerned. If you own the DJI goggles you will benefit a lot more from this than those that do not.

Moving on to accessories, the Mavic had an explosion of aftermarket support as soon as it was released. Companies like polar pro really jumped on board to start releasing filters and hand held cinema grip systems like the katana. But the largest, most expensive and nonsense upgrade is the crystal sky upgrade complete with mounting bracket. I don’t know who would actually purchase this only for the mavic but if you did all power to you. I do see it interesting that DJI is willing to support moves like this and provide a wide assortment of options for their consumers.
