I have subscribed to your channel because you speak slowly and clearly and I understand what you say. I can learn some important info from you that I could apply to my work as a blacksmith. Thank you.

If one paints over light rust, will the rust continue to grow?

So many ways. But which ones last longer? Which ones are the most cost effective? Which ones provide the most value in the long run?

A comment on a great steel is "Corten, " Cor-10 is a great Steel for Structural Welding. See this steel on power-lines and on tall 100-foot power towers used in the structures as an affordable metal-shaped steel.

Other kinds of metal also corrode, but not quite as dramatic as iron

The only way to remove corrosion and "SLOW DOWN" its return (because sooner or later it's going to rust) is to remove all signs of the corrosion, which the only really effective way that I know, is some form of media blasting (most chemical methods only invite more corrosion) to get the corrosion out of the pores, and then immediate treatment. You have to know how corrosion works, physically, in order to "try" to remove, and prevent it's inevitable return.

I need to remember this next time I buy a replacement 3DS stylus.

Rust is an electrolytic process. Impurities in the metal is met by moisture in the air, which in turn produces an electric current which speeds oxidation exponentially.

The reason salt water speeds oxidation to a greater degree is not some magical thing that just is and happens. Salt water introduces both catalysts required to entice this electrolytic process in massive quantities=greater rate of oxidation.

The way it spreads needs to be understood as well. Giving your rusty steel a quick go until you kind of see bare pitted steel is no good. In fact the pits are the hottest spots in that they can introduce opportunities for catalytic oxidation to spark up WITHIN the steel! Especially and exclusively true if your labourer is using an envirofriendly, perfectly acceptable-according to can and sales rep-as a metal primer, acrylic! Your shit will puff up like pastry and everybody will be head scratching wondering why. The only replacement for a oxide based sacrificial coating on steel as primer is expensive conversion.

Hire a proven and actually TECHNICALLY qualified Painter.

How to prevent rust AND help justify the investment of time into something people love to pretend is a mostly useless esthetic treatment for the painter in question. Don't like to pay the rate?
Calculate the cost of replacing all of your structure against consulting a trained specialist in long term property integrity or selling it like a dickhead once it starts falling to pieces.

Oh my. Give me a call and I'll explain how rust works, how to stop it, and prevent it. Theres a great big bunch of useless science behind rust prevention and abatement that the nice sign behind him does'nt eliminate the need to consider when approaching how to keep your steel where you bolt it for a life time.
