Place a warm wet paper towel on the cutting board. The onion will be drawn to the closer moisture of the paper towel, instead of the moisture in your eye

I always put a little fan blowing on the onions while I'm cutting them

Not that anyone should try it, but this reminds me of a friend of mine who used to work as a chemistry teacher. He had an abandoned cooking classroom next to the chemistry hallway, so he would cook his own food on his lunch. One day I came in to help out with the club he sponsored, and he was making french onion soup in the vaccuum hood. I guess if it works for violent fumes, it works well enough for an onion!

This is actually worked for me but I know it probably one of those old wise tails. Putting a piece of ice in your mouth while cutting an onion. It did work for me and has worked for me for years

Peel em and soak em in water for about 10-15 minutes also reduces the chemical and tears when cut.

We could also use a fume hood if you are near a laboratory

Or just put a bowl of water beside it so it absorbs the thing before reaching the eyes

1: leave the roots connected. Cut from the top to bottom.
2: cut in half, peel, refrigerate and cut the next day.
3: (this is what I did) put onion in your mouth. Smell the onion and rub some onion juice on your cheeks under your eyes. When you're done crying the first time, your body will ignore the signals that say your eyes are being irritated. Since you didnt die or go blind, your brain will know to disregard the sensory information.

We do this with bad smells, annoying sounds. This is why farts "go away" quickly. They don't actually go away. Your brain stops acknowledging the signal from your nose because it's not life-threatening.

I light a candle or two. The fumes seem to be impacted by the flame.

Wait, there's a better and easier solution! It seems like a grandma-level kind of tip, but as an Italian that have been cooking since childhood I can say, simply try putting your wrists under cold water for a couple of seconds, that almost immediatly alleviate and stops the burning sensation!

I've been using a wet/damp paper towel technique, it's literally just wet/damp paper towel close to the cutting board and it should absorb that gas, it works for me
