James Watt was a Scottish engineer responsible for introducing the concept of horsepower in the 18th century. He needed a relatable way to communicate the power output of his steam engines, so he compared it to the power of draft horses. Watt conducted an experiment and got two draft horses to lift a mass of 150 pounds out of a well that’s 220 feet deep. The work done in one minute by these horses is equivalent to a horsepower.
