Railway Workers REJECT Biden's Pathetic Compromise

"A union representing railroad maintenance and construction workers on Monday announced that its members have rejected the tentative agreement reached last month between unions and rail carriers, putting pressure on the carriers to offer a better deal to workers in order to avoid a nationwide strike in the coming weeks.

Reporting a turnout of 11,845 members, the Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Employees Division (BMWED) said that 6,646 people had voted against ratifying the agreement and 5,100 had supported the deal, which was brokered last month with the help of the Biden administration's Presidential Emergency Board. Ninety-nine ballots were returned blank or were voided due to user errors.

The tentative agreement reached last month would include one additional paid day off and permit workers to take unpaid days to receive medical care without being penalized by carriers' strict attendance policies—two key concessions from the companies, as railroad workers' unions had expressed deep dissatisfaction with attendance rules and a lack of any paid sick time."

I used to work for one of the largest railroad companies. It wasn’t always like this. They can’t hire more workers because of these policies. Once candidates learn about it, most back out. The level of availability they’re requiring is horrific. I’m a retired vet and even the military made sure you had sufficient time to take care of the rest of your life.
The Biden administration didn’t broker this deal, they prevented the strike about a month ago.

I’m an ex rail road worker and trust me. Theres a lot of of corruption between the union and employers. My union representative would go golfing with my boss.

I’m an RN and member of the Michigan nurses association. This is disgusting! I thought the Democratic Party was supposed to stand with unions. How different this country would be if Bernie was our president. So disheartening!

Solidarity with the union workers from the UK. I've been on the picket lines with the RMT members here in the UK to show my Solidarity with them. Never give in, always stand strong and be proud ✊

I come from a Union family including Teamsters (my dad knew Jimmy Hoffa and his son James), IBEW, CUPE, UFCW and a couple of others, I've been in Union shops, I'm very pro-union. This is for my Brothers and Sisters, don't take the deal. Yes, they can legislate you back to work. What they can't do is actually MAKE you work. You can do a sit down strike, go to work and sit down. They can't make you work, they can't replace you either as for many of you, your positions and duties are specialized. Ask your Union Brothers and Sisters here in Canada for help, for work slowdowns or stoppages for trains coming into Canada from the U.S.. Again, they may be able to force you to come into work, they can't take a whip to you and force you to do the job. We stand on guard with thee. (Sorry, butchered my National Anthem for that one).

Corporations crying no one wants to work
as they give them no benefits, no time off, no sick leave, meager pay and treat them like garbage
Everyone MUST be SO lazy, right?

Biden was asked to resolve this month's ago but has let it drag on. They haven't had a raise in several years & the not keeping up with inflation is absolutely correct. Managers have gotten generous bonuses while the workers can barely get a day off for medial care.
Thank you for accurately reporting what is going on.

I guarantee you the administrative staff of this company gets PTO, sick days, 401(k) blah blah blah blah blah all at the expense of all the other workers…
That’s the way it is in every American company!

As someone who has worked in both a union shop and non-union shop. I always found workers are always exploited for profit

Thank you for covering this. As a railway worker I can tell you that the companies are not negotiating in good faith.

Just a few things to consider:

1. These negotiations have been going on for nearly 3 years and the Dems nor the Reps have stepped in till now and not in a strong position.

2. Every few years the government shuts down (Strikes) while they negotiate the budget. So the actual government can strike but not the railroad workers.

All railroaders have stories, one that I will always remember is a co-worker was having bad stomach pains. Goes to the hospital. Finds out he has advanced stomach cancer. That night he was flown from San Antonio to Houston and had 1/2 his stomach removed. The railroad Crew Management Services (CMS) would not allow him to take time off. From his hospital bed 200 miles from home, right after surgery he could not get time off without facing discipline. John has since passed away and even though this is not an isolated incident, it is one that I witnessed first hand just how little compassion or humanity the railroads have for their employees.

Wow, they just want to work them to damn death!!! I hope they get what they want, but if they don't, I don't blame them for striking.
