Avoid wet belt engines, all of them!

The wet belts are made using HNBR (hydrogenated nitrile) rubber for oil resistance, mixed with glass filled nylon for added strength.

This material is great for static and dynamic sealing, such as o-rings and polypaks and are durable in harsh conditions upto and above 150c.

Chemically, it’s a good choice!

However, unless your oil is stupidly clean, you run the risk of degradation from small metal shards in the oil penetrating the belt’s teeth.

These materials like to be run on a very smooth surface finish (at least 63Ra, micro inches), and anything rougher and the material degrades faster.

I’m a 25 year chartered mechanical Engineer in the oil and gas industry and we know this, as we have seen this many times in our own tools.

I see why Ford thought about using these wet belts, but they lacked the practical experience in their ultimate decision making.

Still can’t believe Honda made the stupid mistake of going for a wet belt. I’ll be keeping my 2007 1.8 Type S GT, 170k miles & the timing CHAIN has never missed a beat!

Only mechanics can love a wet belt. I ruled out a civic because of that. Ended up with a Hyundai Fastback N Line, with a chain and an extra cylinder

I’m looking at buying a Honda 1.0. Other than the wet belt, is the engine solid ? If I replace the belt, the engine should last a long time ?

Hi, for this engine how did you support the engine weight after taking off the mount to remove timing cover, as you’ve also removed the sump so cannot put an axle stand under.

Do you do many of these? Seen many problems with the belt wearing and blocking the oil pick up?
