JEB Stuart is a controversial figure in Civil War History for abandoning the Army of Northern Virginia during the Gettysburg Campaign, but was he more than a one-hit-wonder? Was he a genius? In this video, I dissect the usefulness of JEB Start to Robert E. Lee and demonstrate what Stuart brought to the table as far as military tactics and strategy.

Stuart was a cool dude. He used to hang with Stonewall. I think he bought him a uniform jacket.

Forrest was the superior horseman, commander and strategist. Stuart was the superior outrider/scout and cavalier (politician), but ultimately his priorities of showmanship and being a glory hound cost him his life and greatly damaged the prestige and strength in reconnaissance of the ANV. Forrest would never have had to deal with this weakness, he was too mentally strong and physically imposing to care what any of his fellow rival officers thought about his reputation.

My great great grandfather served under jet Stuart. My great great grandfather is buried in oakwood cemetery in Raleigh North Carolina. Awesome video brother!

Forrest was largely an irregular cavalry commander tasked with different objectives compared to JEB who was very much a part of the regular army and used like the antennae of an ant for the ANV. JEB was also extremely versatile with his ability to adeptly command infantry, which was the case at Chancellorsville.

Now I know why Lee was so Anxious about Stuart at Gettysburg but he was out doing his job.

Don't forget, it was Stuart who was responsible for Longstreet not getting flanked by Porter at the Second Battle of Manassas. He was *DETRIMENTAL* to the AONV.

A very excellent video and depiction of the screen! Thank you for sharing and teaching!

Thank you for sharing this video. Was Stuart unable to adapt, or was the Confederate Cavalry by 1864 unable, due to the exigencies of the War by that point in the fighting, unable—either with manpower, horses, or equipment—to match the increasingly effective US Cavalry?

Thanks for your video on Stewart and the purpose of screening, I would love to see more indepth study of JEB Stewart, I have always admired him as a cavalry officer even though I admire Forest as a fighter and Mosby as a daring and motivated cavalry officer.

I've come to the conclusion that a theme throughout the civil war is that the north and it's generals began to wrap their heads around the fact that modern warfare is a meat grinder and a battle of attrition, and the south struggled to come to grips with it right to the end. Because it's such an ugly fact, bourne out by the subsequent European wars.

I think that even to the end Lee relied on the valour of the individual soldier, and Stuart replied on the bravery of the napoleonic cavalry charge, because neither could quite grasp that those days were over.

Biographers of Stuart as well as accounts by Moseby suggest that Jeb was working around unexpected Union movements almost immediately after leaving Salem/Marshal Va on the eve of the Gettysburg campaign—thus, from the beginning his aims/schedule/route modified dramatically. Furthermore, he and his men followed an exhausting route to rejoin CSA forces at Carlyle and/or York. His stamina and courage was and is undeniable. That said, so was his ego and thus it’s fair to criticize the failures leading up to Gettysburg as Stuart was likely trying to redeem prior embarrassments in Va. Pride may have driven him in part beyond his limits and orders— in my opinion. That said, he remains a legend and deserves to be so.

Your breakdown of the cavalry movements is excellent, you're definitely one of my favorite historians.
I know I would enjoy, and hopefully others would also if you could do a breakdown of John Hunt Morgan's raid through Indiana and Ohio. I've researched and have traveled a good deal of the J.H.Morgan heritage trail.
Just a suggestion

Very informative video which fills a hole for me, since a lot is written about cavalry movements, but not much is written about cavalry engagements aside from the big ones like Brandy Station, at least in the popular media.

I found a portrait of JEB Stuart in a thrift store.
